Blade length reduction...

#1

Post by msikk »

Does anyone here do blade length reductions as a customization service? I need to get the blade lengths of two of my knives cut down. One is a ZDP-189, and the other an S30v.

Thanks!

It would help to know where you are, as we have members from all parts of the globe. If you're somewhere other than the USA it may be more cost effective to use someone closer to home, but if you're in the US, Steve Rice (STR) who has his own subforum over on BladeForums is one who comes to mind.

SFO (warranty) might be able to do it too

Just updated my profile to show my location :)

I live in Maryland - Washington DC metro area.

I am looking at drastic reductions - reducing a 3.5" blade to about 1.5" :D

What/who is SFO?

Thanks guys.

Why do you want to reduce the length of a blade? I also live in the DC metro area in Maryland, but i'm also quite close to DC. There is no blade limit in Maryland, so i am curious to know why you are getting a blade reduction?

Thanks,

SFO= Spyderco Factory Outlet (in Golden, CO). I know it's a weird question but why not just buy a smaller knife?

I do have smaller knives (T-Mag). But, I also love the heft and strength of a new Chinook 3 I just got. I travel to Chicago frequently and the reduced length would be great there.

Another reason is the looks of a tiny blade on a large handle. I love how it would look, and it would be funny :p

How can I contact SFO?

Woah, 3.5" to 1.5", that's quite drastic. Just keep in mind if you do that the blade shape/profile will be changed dramatically, and you may not like the end result.

You can contact SFO on spyderco's website under "contact us".

This is probably what you've got in mind. If I messed up the link check out Spyderco Picture Gallery- Show your mods- Post #6.

Hope you enjoy. Great photo Chapman Preferred.

Spyderco probably will not be able to help you in modding your knife....They wont do any aftermarket work to their knives unless it is to correct a flaw by them, or sharpen it. But there are a number of knife modders around the forums.

Excellent. There are so many things here where the "best" answer to a question can be totally different depending on the country you live in.

Not even sure if the modders would be up for that. We're talking a serious amount of metal removal unless you break off a large chunk of the blade, which would be risky at best. But, since it never hurts to ask, I'd still say contact STR via his forum.

Personally I think the chinook would look sweet if you took off just the up-swept tip and ground it into more of a drop point/stretch 2 style point. that wouldn't really reduce the length either.

What's the one you want to mod in ZDP?

Stretch 2. But, I might end up doing only one of them. Not sure which one right now.

I'm off looking for STR.

MENTAL- yes, that is close to what I'm looking for!

You want to check out Tom Krein. There is no way Spyderco will do that for you. They really don't like to do any mods AFAIK.

STR just declined my request and also recommended Tom Krein. How do I contact Tom?

IIRC, Tom recently stated he was not going to accept any more regrind jobs, at least for a while, so the same may apply to reshaping blades. Still, it doesn't hurt to ask, contact would be via the contact info on his website.

Tom Krein has recently posted on his sub-forum of the Usual Suspect Network forum that he is not accepting regrinds until further notice or possibly at all. Someone else who might be willing to do the work for you is a gent named richard j on bladeforums. He does not have sub-forum, but he does sharpening and regrinds. There is also a guy on this forum who lives in CO called Brad Southard who might be someone else to contact.

Can you make a drawing of what you would like to have done to your knife? Basic shape and point location?

My modifications similar to what you are looking for were performed because I purchased some broken bladed Spyderco knives at the Factory Sale at Spyderco Head quarters.

Edit: I'm going to be offline until tomorrow night so any replys may be delayed.

Hi Chapman, yes, Tom Krein also declined.

I don't have a specific shape in mind for the end result, just the blade length. I am open to any shape that would be easiest to achieve.

Thanks!
