VG-10 is supposed to be one of the harder steels right ? so why did the silverware in the dishwasher cause some minor scratches ?

just wondering .

Are you sure they are scratches?
Running your knife through the dishwasher can etch the blade.
Just one of the reasons to not put a pocketknife in the dishwasher.

Clothes Washing machines, on the other hand, seem to do an excellent job of cleaning out even the pivot when people forget them in pockets. I havent tried it yet, but you could find or make a pouch and run the knife through inside the pouch. The pouch is not so much to prevent damage to the knife as to prevent damage to other contents, and to the washer itself.

Knife Knut on a shoestring budget.

Ît might happen that silverware creates scratches. In every metal are alloy components that are harder than the "complete" metal. Think of chromium in your knife. So these parts may create small scratches, although the VG-10 is harder in general. Metal on metal always results in scratches, some deeper some not so.
To clean my knives I use brake cleaner. It works very well and I haven't had problems yet.
