Spyderco Leafstorm lock-up?

#1

Post by Chris_Himself »

Howdy yalls!

I recently was gifted a Leafstorm by a generous person who donated it after hearing of the theft of all my knives on another forum, and when I got it, it was pretty much brand new, even in the ziplock bag it came in so I know this wasn't a user.

I was not a fan of the ergos trying to find various grips that would work for me. Funny how something that doesn't feel right just ends up working for you in the long run.

My preferred grip is middle and ring in the recess and it locks the knife in so your index doesn't fly into the blade. It's an extremely capable hard use knife in my opinion due to blade shape. I love that hollow grind that starts out halfway and it's crazy steep too.

That being said, do any of you Leafstorm owners out there have up and down play that results in a very faint rattling sound? The framelock bar does not meet the knife squarely until you push the lockbar in a little more. I just want to know if this is a common issue and if there is a remedy before I have to part with it for warranty repair/replacement.

I have contacted Spydercrew about this and by no means am I complaining at all about the knife. Things happen and I can understand that this knife has very particularly close tolerances.

By the way, great job on producing such a unique design! This is among the most unique knives I've ever owned.

Chris

i love mine. solid, totally. no noise or rattle. ergos great.
in nj ....small blade so i use it as one of a dozen users.

i will say this about aesthetics...
when people see it they ask if "thats rust right there?" they say. i have to constantly say thats the normal color.

Mine locks up tight with no play or extraneous noises. It came that way from the box. I carry it most days at work and haven't noticed any changes in tightness. I have found it an excellent knife with a great blade.

No, not so far. IMHO, I believe that the "average user" will pass these knives on to their children and then some before any lock wear becomes noticeable.

I had one that was similar a while ago. If I recall, I think that the stop pin is eccentric so it can be loosened and rotated to help adjust the lockup. Perhaps the pin shifted? You should be able to do this without even taking apart the folder. Or send it to Spyderco for warranty & service.

I tend to survive off of only 20 dollars a week in my situation so shipping it would be a huge blow to me as a college student so I will give it a try. That stop pin does seem to be the problem based on what you told me.
