Guys, this is a great response! I didn't think I'd get that.
Wec, I actually think the first picture looks better than the second one. It seems more natural to me and you can see the details of the knife better, while the second one seems to be a bit too bright. Just my opinion though, i'm no expert by far.
It seems as though most of use about the same range of camera's, just different brands. I love the photoboxes. I guess I should make one.

I use one of four Canon digital SLR's - two 1D Mark II N, a 1Ds, and a 20D.
I took that photo a while ago, I need to update it, since I also have a Sigma 300-800 5.6, 35 1.4L, 15 fisheye, and 70-200 2.8L IS, plus the 1DIIN #2 and 1Ds not pictured.
Sporting 61 Spydercos in G-2, AUS-6, 8CR13MoV, ATS-55, H-1, VG-10, CPM-S30V, N690Co, ZDP-189/420J2, ZDP-189, AUS-10, and 52100.
Hm... Now the second pic looks too bright to me, too :p . Really appreciate your suggestion, snuffaluff :) .snuffaluff wrote: Wec, I actually think the first picture looks better than the second one. That's the exact same camera I have and use... :cool:David Lowry wrote:I use a Nikon Coolpix 4100. It's just a regular average Joe type of camera (4 Mega pixels). I simply have good lighting and use the Macro setting on the camera. I take almost all of my pictures directly underneath a lamp in my basement that I put a 150 watt bulb in. The lamp is only on during pictures because the bulb exceeds the allowed wattage on the lamp.![]()

I agree with you. First one looks more natural.snuffaluff wrote:Wec, I actually think the first picture looks better than the second one. I use a Panasonic Lumix ??? on macro and a homemade box like enyong's with shop lights. I then color correct on the computer. It does well enough for me.

That would be the 3002S Stag Spyderkey, later called the Hummingbird, blade length is 1 1/2” and 2 1/8” overall closed. Pretty much a LLK.

Yes, I do photography professionally as well as for fun. It's a lot of fun, and generally a lot less frowned on in public than me carrying 61 spydercos :p It's something different every day for work, and no matter what your experience, there's always something new to try.enyong112 wrote:Woweee... a whole lot L-serires lenses... hey malice, you're a photographer by profession? To start out, stick with just the camera and kit lens. The kit lens (generally an 18-55) is generally a decent lens for average use. Once you have used that lens for a while, you will see if it's not wide enough or long enough or fast enough for you. For $100, it's a fine lens to start out with. Many users opt for a 75-300 zoom next. For many people, that combination is fine for average shooting.
Whatever you do, never, EVER get interested in night-time sports shooting, or long range birding....at least if you want any money in your wallet. And never join a photography forum, especially if, by seeing photos of knives here, you decide that you MUST have that knife.

Don't worry about the gear - better gear won't make you a better photographer - it's all about your eye. And seeing that you're here on the Spyderco forums, you've obviously got a good eye

These are generally my sporting and wildlife lenses:

I took this one yesterday - note the quarter i left in the picture as a size reference...
If you have questions about camera gear, http://www.fredmiranda.com has a massive forum dedicated to all sorts of photography which you can learn a lot from.
snuffaluff, as of late, I haven't uploaded very many shots, but I'll post a few links to recent ones. Sorry for the bunch of links - my other site isn't up yet, so I haven't really organized things much...I'm really lazy about updating my site...
Warning to anyone on a slow connection and/or with a low resolution display...some of these following files are large...you've been warned...

If these posts inspire anyone to get a new camera here is a really good digital camera review website:
http://www.dpreview.com/
I've purchased two cameras after reading the reviews here and have always been happy.

It's better to have knife and not need it than to need a knife and not have it.

What's nice about this setup is that I can move/add lights around. I can put up side reflectors if needed. Due to the width of the diffuser, it spreads the light out pretty good. I have two 8X10 acrylic picture frames, one with black paper on it and the other with a mirror paper, both used as reflectors as needed.
It's better to have knife and not need it than to need a knife and not have it.
