New member looking for advice...
Hello Guys and Girls,
Im new to this forum so please take it easy on me :) Im looking for 2 knives to buy and i was drawn to Spyderco. From my research Spyderco knives look like quality knives that will last.
First knive i was looking for is a knife that i will primarily use for saltwater fishing. This lead me to the Pacific Salt which im decided to buy already. I was leaning to the PE yellow pacific salt. Which i think will serve my purpose. Any comments on this?
Im also looking to buy a small EDC knife and that led me to the Urban. I think im decided to buy the urban as well but here is the problem.... I need some advice on which urban to get? I dont know which blade shape to go with. Color wise i think the orange looks cool. Blade shape i kinda like the leaf. Unfortunately they dont make a orange leaf blade urban.
So here are some of my questions... What is the most appropriate blade for an all purpose EDC knife between the two? What are the uses of a leaf blade vs wahrncliffe? This will be my only EDC knife until i go crazy and start collecting :D so i want to make an informed decision.
Please let me know so i can put in my order as soon as i make up my mind. Thanks again and looking forward to your replies.

Most people are going to ask what you are going to cut everyday with your knife to give you the best answer.

Its for an all purpose EDC i guess. My job doesn't deal with using a knife all the time. Its mainly for multi purpose cutting tool i guess... What ever life brings that i may need to cut ... as a newbie i cant really explain it. Hope this helps. Thanks again.

Let me try to guess what you'd be cutting. Food items and packages, a few non-food packages, some cardboard and paper wrap. That should cover most of it, correct? If you're liking the color of the wharncliff, go for that. That blade shape would make for an excellent utility as will the leaf shaped blade.

If you like the orange, but prefer a leaf blade, you could look at the UKPK, which is just a hair larger than the Urban.
I'm just curious, but why the Urban? I ask because it's a non-locking model, and most people tend to choose locking knives unless prohibited for some reason (law, company policy, etc.).
That said, there's nothing wrong with choosing one of the Slipits. I think they take non-locking knives to a whole different level.
As far as your choice of the Pacific Salt... that would make a fine EDC knife, also. I just purchased an Aqua Salt that will go in my fishing creel, and am thinking of picking up a Caspian Salt for the belt when fishing. You might consider one, also, since you can hold it and still use your hands without dropping the knife.
And welcome to the forums. :)

Yeah, I don't think you can go wrong with whatever style you pick unless you are super picky. I've edc'd both styles and both work good for some things and ok for others.

Why the urban?.... its compact... lightweight and easy in the pocket. I dont really have a preference as to locking and none locking blade. As for the Pacific salt it will be primarily for fishing purpose only. Its too big for my liking as an EDC knife.Joe Internet wrote:

Welcome EarthAngel. Don't think anyone will jump on you in this forum. This is a good virtual place :)
I prefer the the Urban leaf myself. It's been carried constantly since I got it. You will love the feel of either blade version. It screams quality and usefulness when you pick it up. Very comfortable knife to have. It is one of my favorites, when you get your's you'll know what I mean :D

I'm a major fan of the Kiwi, but if I was only going to carry one knife, I'd carry something else. I find wharncliffe blades less versatile than leaf, spear, clip, or drop point blades.
Another option would be to look for a Squash Jigged Bone Kopa. Pretty much the same size and shape as a leaf blade Urban.

Go with the leaf shape, the belly makes it a far more versatile for EDC use. As far as locking vs nonlocking is concerned you really can't go wrong with the Urban. My orange G10 UKPK is one of my favourite EDC knives. The ergos on the knife are outstanding, and the design mitigates the safety concerns associated with slipjoints.
If the funds come around I would like to get a g-10 UKPK. I've heard so many good things about it. Some kind of true Wharncliffe would be nice to try also. Alas, if I could only afford them all :D
