Let her start her own memories! The salt is a great knife as everyone is saying.

I would second the recommendation I saw upthread for the Native. That little extra bit of blade would be nice to have.

A Moran is a great fixed blade for her. If she isn't comfortable with that weight I'd suggest a FFG Delica or a Centofante 3:

I always carry a Swiss army knife (usually a farmer) when hiking since it saves my knife from prying, sawing, being used as a screwdriver and the knife blade is usable in a pinch :D

In my few days on the AT, I was surprised how little my knives were needed. What I did find I needed was more para cord, more knowledge about knot tying and more experience with my water filter.

Find a knife for her so she can have the same fond memories that you have with your knife. It isn't like another Delica won't be just as reliable as this one.

One of our last hike was in the Highlands of Virginia in the summer. For 4 days our packs were around 20 pounds loaded up. We cook in one small pot, our tent uses tracking poles and we simply keep it all to a minimum. But I am really looking at trying fixed blade for me. The ESEE 3 or 4, Fallkniven F1 or S1 and maybe even a Bark River Bravo 1 if I could spend that much. I keep thinking one of these would be really nice. But I have a hard time thinking that I need to add half a pound of weigh to my pack.
If your leaning towards a fixed blade but not sure of the weight, get a Mule. This way you can have a custom sheath made to your specs. Also I would wrap the handle in 550 cord. This will give you extra cord for emergencies and be a light material for your handle. There are many examples of good comfortable wraps for handles. This way you have the utility of a fixed blade and it meets your specs.
