Is there something wrong with my Sage 2

#1

Post by arjung »

hey guys,

I got a sage 2 back in June, and this was my first framelock. i really like the knife and it turned me on to that locking mechanism, but I think that there is something wrong with my particular model. I can easily disengage the lock. I can't do this with my sebenza or strider. Is this normal for the Sage 2?

I'm guessing not. If so, then would this be covered under warranty.

Looks like a definite warranty issue to me...if you haven't dealt with warrenty and repair for spyderco before, don't worry, they are super helpful and nice.

BTW I just order a Sage 1 (CF) today, I am freaking pumped! I love the whole series

Like you said, it's not good. I would be very curious about how the locking surface on the titanium looks like...

Yep you should send it in for sure! They are definitely not supposed to do that.

For those curious, this is where my lockup is right now

Image

My webcam inverses the image so don't worry it isn't left handed lol. Lockup is deceptively solid. Zero play in any direction. it is when I apply downward pressure not only on the blade, but also on the frame does it 'slip'

If you are not touching/releasing the lock bar it definitely shouldn't happen.

I am applying some pressure to the lockbar, but not so much that it's the focus of all my pressure.

Which direction? Unless you are pushing it toward the release direction it shouldn't matter, none of the frame locks I had would release like that.

Yeah it should not be doing that. Send it in, they will fix it or replace it. My sage II locks up solid with the bar at about 50%. It just looks like your lock bar is not seating over far enough.

I'll take it - I always wanted a Sage SLIPIT :D

But seriously, if you are clenching a RIL in your fist then the lock bar should be less likely to move out and release, so it does seem a bit weird. Is it my imagination or does the tang (where the lock bar engages) have a big chunk taken out of it on the right? Shouldn't that be flat?

Definitely a candidate for W&R - I'm sure the good folks in Golden will take care of you.

Don't think there's anything wrong with the model, it's been on the market for over a year without any reports of lock issues. On the other hand, there does seem to be something wrong with your Sage II. Certainly worth sending in to Spyderco W&R.
