To Digi-cam or not to Digi-cam, that is the question

#1

Post by BlackNinja »

Do you prefer Digi-cam, or black handle's? My Para-1 w/ digi-cam is on its way to me from NGK so I can’t say if I like it better than my black handled Para-1.

What is the ‘draw’ to digi-cam handles?

One, I was a young man in the 80's so I love anything "camo."

However the Digi-Camo process is pretty cool. It has the translucent quality to it, that is just different. I had Military that had it, sold it when I needed some money. Have a Para Military with it, and deeply love it. Plan on getting a black bladed version. You really need the black blade to look the best.

I think it would be neat to do different camo patterns. Maybe an urban camo? The desert camo?

I still think a leopard print done with this process would rock.

Who is in for a Leopard Print G-10 Military Sprint Run?!?! I am!!!

Given the choice, I prefer black. That being said, I've collected knives for a long time and sometimes black gets boring. I'm happy to see new colors coming out for example, the new Delicas and Enduras.

What's the draw to Digi-Cam? Well, the military is a big customer of knives so things like Foliage Green and Digi-Cam appeal to them and anyone who likes "military looking" stuff. Black appeals to "Special Ops" people and Mall Ninjas :p and anyone else who likes good ol' black. Plus black has a slimming effect on those folks who have added a few pounds over the years. :p

I as a matter of personal opinion only, dislike digi or any kind of cam for three reasons

1. I am in the military and camo anything other than uniform items is sort of played out for me.

2. Camo makes things look like they are designed to be used in the military and therefore more like weapons.

3. It's next to impossible to find if lost anywhere outdoors.

I think the camo looks pretty cool, but it's very mall ninja for civilian EDC usage.

I have an all black Para SE and a Digi/ black Para PE and love them both. That being said my favorite is the Digi cam handles. I think they look cool and it is something different than plain black. Don't get me wrong I like black handled knives too, I just like the digi because it is different. I wish more knives were offered with those scales.

I would love to see a Digi camo black bladed (SE and PE) Para 2 :D

Somebody must like them, because Spyderco keeps making them, but I am not among that group. :D Not crazy about textured G-10, regardless of flavor but, if I had to rank the colors Spyderco has used to date DigiCam would come in dead last. That's assuming the stuff on the Leafstorm is G-11. ;)

fwiw, my favorite color is od green, so i love my d2 milie, fg d4 and e4. i think the digi with a black blade looks great, just like stangbang said, although i don't have any digi scaled knives. would love to have the black bladed digi para.
bushbadger did a m2 with digi scales and it looked awesome!
i'm all for more knives with digi scales, but that's just me.
later,
don

I really dislike camo - I just don't see the need for it either - why would you want a knife that is camouflaged so you can't find it when you need it?
My spydies: Squeak, Tenacious, Terzuola, D'Allara, UKPK CF peel-ply pre-production, UKPK CF smooth pre-production, UKPK G10 orange leaf-blade, UKPK FRN grey drop-point, UKPK FRN maroon leaf-blade, Bug ... all PE blades :)

My favorite knife used to be my black blade black handled Para. Now it's my black blade digicam para. They both look great. I agree that the black blades look better with the digicam scales

I prefer orange. The polar opposite of digicam, and I like it for precisely that reason.

This is the #1 reason i won't buy one. My goal is to teach people that knives don't HAVE to be weapons, and that they're first and foremost a tool. People will instantly associate anything camo with military and thus a weapon, even if the military use it as a tool also.

That said, if this wasn't an issue i'd probably still go with black, as i like to keep things simple and i think less = more.

I do have a digicam Millie w/ black blade, but I have never carried it, it's more like the back-up of my back-up Millies :)
I do like the looks but honestly carrying it would be overkill
also used to have a digicam Para but traded it for an older 440V Millie

The digicam is pretty cool. It's almost translucent in some places
