Stop me and my drill! Pivot question...

#1

Post by sea2peak »

I have an overwhelming urge to drill out the pinned pivot on one or more of my Spydies in order to put in a tension-adjustable screw - how bad of an idea is this? I assume I can find suitable screws for the replacements somewhere, excepting the Salt series (H-1 or titanium)? Also, I've heard that if one is handy with a hammer and solid metal rod, it is possible to increase the tension of a pinned pivot - if so, instructions would be greatly appreciated, and may prevent me from taking the drill out of the closet...thanks in advance.

It is not necessary to do extraordinary things in life but only to do ordinary things extraordinarily well.

i found an old, used, sprint run, grey frn ce ladybug at the flea market, and it had some bladeplay.
what i did was put the pivot pin in the jaws of a small vice.
i gradually increased the tension on the vice. checking the knife between tries, until there was no play.
seemed like i had more control with this method than beating on it with a hammer.
just beware, if you go to far, your knife will become very difficult to open.
hope this helps!
later,
don

Thanks for the link and vise idea. I think I'll try the vise on my Salts since I'm fairly certain the H1 screws will be impossible to find. Can't wait to try the screw replacement on my only abused Spyderco, a Dragonfly.
