What would you choose

#1

Post by Bluntrauma »

Before I start, yes, I know they are so cheap you could afford both but that's not how this works. :) You are stuck somewhere in a remote place and you can have a choice of 1 out of these 2 knives to use for survival. Which would you choose and why?

Mora

Opinel

Mora - more comfortable handle, plus, for "survival" I'll take a fixed blade over a folder anytime.

Mora... unless concealment or storage space is an issue, I pretty much always opt for FBs over folders.

I don't know either of these knives that well but I assume we are talking about a fixed blade Mora vs. a folding Opinel...
If so I would choose a fixed blade for survival. The fixed blade Mora should be more durable if you need to pound on the spine or generally put stress on the knife, where the Opinel folder locking ring and pivot might not be up to the abuse you might have to put it through.
And if necessary it would be easier to replace a fixed blade handle than it would be on a folder on the off chance it broke.

**** I guess there's no contest here. :) I would have to agree as well. I am looking for something to throw in my bag when I go fishing, trekking or whatever. I just have to decide which one to get. I like the 2000 but I like having a guard and I also like the lanyard hole.

I have never owned a Mora but have heard so many good things about their quality. I'll figure out which one I want eventually. In the meantime I grabbed a Opinel since I haven't had one in years. They have given them a face lift and since I can't find o toxic green Jester...

Ok, that's a somewhat different scenario than what comes into my mind when someone mentions a knife for survival. My thoughts go more to Anthony Hopkins in "The Edge", or Tom Hanks in "Cast Away". For what you're doing, I'm sure the Opinel will do fine. Truth is, at least around here, for a survival scenario while fishing or hiking, a good whistle would be infinitely more valuable than a good knife.

Hah, well made point and true, though the best-performing whistles are incredibly unsatisfying in terms of materials and tactile feedback. :D :(

The Opinel is a nice pocket knife, but I carry the Mora on me around the "farm" for serious work and protection from the wildlife.

The Mora was also the knife I gave my wife when she was going on a camping trip and asked for a knife that was cheap enough that won't miss it if she lost it. She needed a knife for protection and camp chores. She slept with close by. True be told, I would miss that knife if she lost and would buy another immediately.

I'm not a fan of either knife....so I guess I would opt for Deacon's whistle...Doc :D

Mora. I prefer a fixed blade for wilderness/survival situations, and I have not liked the Opinel I handled a while ago.

I would take Mora, as its fixed vs. folder.

+1 ... no reason to have a folder in a survival situation - the better knife is the fixed blade.

For a survival situation it would be a fix-blade knife for me.

A Mora. I've had Opinels wood swell up from high humidity to the point it wouldn't open without pliers. Yes, you can treat them to keep it from happening but still, in a pinch, one handed it would be difficult to open.
