Native Alternatives?

#1

Post by marcus1 »

I like the blade (shape/looks/etc) on the Native (not sure how functional it is for what I do, but still like it :) )

However; when I held one I didn't like the handle (not large enough for my hands to hold, or perhaps it was the shape. Either way I didn't like the feel of holding it).

Can anyone suggest an alternative with a similar blade? I was tempted with the Perrin PPT (although not really similar, has a very interesting blade) but not sure about it... what others would you suggest?

Thanks!

I think youre right that the Perrin PPT is not very similar, but if you want a handle to fill your hand, the PPT can be it. Its scales are sort of rounded and have a thicker profile than most Spydies. For what that is worth.

Manix 2 and Sages would be the closest in blade shape.

You said you've held the Native. Have you tried the Native III? Very similar blade shape but the handle is so much more comfortable. Probably the best "fit to hand" and definitely the most comfortable grip on any Spydie I own. It has recently been discontinued, but they can still be found.

I've got the two Manix 2's (154cm and HXP :) ), so I love those. I've looked at a Sage and may get one as I found one at a good price. But it doesn't have the same shape of blade, looks closer to my Caly3. So not sure I'll get the Sage or wait and get a SuperLeaf :)

Not seen a Native 3, so I'll have to check that out. Thanks.

They are out, with CF handles, so Way too expensive (so long as I don't see one in hand ;) )... but 2x the price and they changed the blade (which still looks really cool!).

Actually I was talking about G10 or FRN Golden made Natives.
CF Native4 was discontinued.

Yep there's a G-10, VG-10 Native 4 coming out which should be much more affordable than the CF Native 4. FFG on it as well :D

Anyway as for current Spyderco offerings that you might be interested in is definitly the Sage 1 or 2. It's probably the closest you can get to the actual blade shape of a Native and has pretty much identical blade length as well. You might wanna check out the Caly 3 as well but its a lot more rounded leaf shape blade compared to the Native.

Not sure about the VG-10 steel, as the Native 4 is slated to be made in Golden. S30V is much more likely and Sal has mentioned that it will be getting various handle materials too. From an older post by Sal:

Hopefully the "anything else our customers want" includes some premium steels like S90V, Damascus, etc.

I'd like to see more knives with the CTS-XHP from Golden. A Native 4 with FFG XHP would be awesome.

But for now, Native III may do the trick for the OP.

Aside from the flat vs. saber grind, the shape of the Caly3/UKPK and Native blades are almost identical. They look very different because of the thumb ramp down to the thinner handle on the Caly vs. the spine flush to the thicker handle on the Native, but the actual cutting part of the blade is the same. I would imagine the Sage is similar, but don't own one for comparison. If you want a longer handle, check out the Para. Fantastic knife, that one.
