Some rock, bone, etc. carvings...

#1

Post by Jazz »

Thought I could post a few pics of my hobby that helps me afford to buy Spydies. Here're some necklaces I made.

The bear is bone with a wee bit of scrimshaw for detail and the turtle is Ebony...

Image

Simpler ones - Chinese names and happy face my wife requested and drew...

Image

Fancy and time consuming - I couldn't even sell the weaved one because it took so long...

Image

Couple repeats plus a popular seller (elephant)...

Image

The rocks are all river rocks.

Thanks for lookin'.

- best wishes, Jazz.

Really nice work man, I like the middle one in the third picture a lot. Keep it up!

Nice work Jazz, I can really appreciate what you did there cause I used to play around with rock carving myself...Make no mistake about it guys, it may look simple but it is a pain staking process, to get those results....I gave up Rock carving some years back and started doing an old american folk art of Apple carving (faces) then dehydrating them (shrinkie dink style)to look like old people...way cool, but even after spraying them with varnish ...they only last for so long...but fun to do anyway...Doc :D

Very cool, bro! What kind of steel is that and where did you get it? Also, how did you make them? I'm quite interested.

Very cool. I read about those when researching Chinese caligraphy. Do you carve it in rock? Do you have a pic of it?

Rocks or any kind of fancy stones (like transparent stone of some sort with rare mineral inside) are used usually for long term purpose (for example, used for withdrawal your money from a bank, ATM password change, or terminating your bank account). Wood is used too because it is cheaper and it just works.

You have talent, Jazz. Those chinese characters aren't easy. Excellent job, sir :D .

For Jazz:

a pic of a seal with my entire name on it, not quite finished. carved in some mystery rock from a dodgy looking shop in an ancient shopping center in the middle of singapore's CBD.

Thanks for the compliment and info, wec12.
thebestnoobcake (that's a long name :p ) - That is so cool and looks like tons of work. What do you carve it with? The stone is cool, too. Thanks for sharing. I love stone carving stuff. :D

It is surprisingly easy cos it's not really a 3D carving. I just draw the charcters in reverse onto the rock with pencil and scrape/cut away everything that is not my name =p Being rock, you don't need to scrape very far for the characters to stand out when stamped onto a flat surface.
The rock is quite soft and the tool is quite hard. I'll try to find them after I come back from my exam. Wish me luck!

Hehe, that's a fancy stone :D . Pretty cool one with beautiful color. Are you trying to match that to your orange Spydies :p ? Never had one like that; used to have couple wooden ones.
Thanks for the compliment and info, wec12.

i'm glad you liked it, the steel is a special gas pipe made of stainless steel, i cut it to small rings, then shape the wood to fit perfectly, i then glue it with epoxy and shape it all together by spinning it on a hand drill fixed on a vise (like a lathe) and using files and send paper and finelly polishing it.
