Questions for Sal and Spydercrew....

#1

Post by Marion David Poff »

Sal,

Where did you guys source your O1 for the BushcraftUK, is it Starrett?

I thought there was a plan to offer the Bushcraft, like the Mule, sans handle and sheath, as a kit knife, can we still look forward to that?

And, with all the steel love floating around, any thoughts on one of the runs being in like M4, 3V, or one of the other high wear vanadium tool steels? Or maybe some other unobtainium carbon steel, like Super Blue....

Finally combed the after-market 'til I got one, and I love it!

Can't wait for the O1 and G-10 combination!

Thanks,
Marion

I thought the main idea of a Bushcraft type knife/scandi grind was blade toughness and ability to sharpen easily in the field. Hence, O-1.

i love my bushcraftUK, since gettin mine, a 2nd, ive gotten 2 more scandi buchcraft knives! a super thick condor bushlore, and an enzo trapper kit that i handled myself, turned out awsome btw.

i think a bushcraft in 3V and canvas micarta handles would be crazy! id buy that sucker up real quick!!!

Hi Marion,

Don't know who made the O1. It's a standard steel for many foundries.

Blanks will more than likely go on sale this month.

We plan to eventually make a hi-tech steel version, full flat grind, S90V or 20CP.

Oh please please please make it from one of those steels, or 3v, or A2, and give us beautiful canvas micarta scales...

I hardly ever beg, but for this one I'll get knee pads...

Hey,

I really like my Bushcraft. I like the idea of G10 (or some synthetic material). I found it really easy to sharpen, and mirror polish with a waterstone.

I dream the dream of steel and blade. Now I'm dreaming it awake too.

O1 is pretty standard.

Good to hear about the blanks, thank you!

I will have to read up on 20CP

That is one of the design parameters. But even the high wear resistance steels cut pretty easy with diamonds.

Do you have an image of your Enzo?

I don't sense that Micarta is in the cards, as it was found to shrink in the trip from Taiwan to here...

The G-10 and O1 version should be seen this year. I too am anxiously awaiting it.

IIRC, O1 is a pretty long-established tool steel by machinist's standards, the O standing for "oil quenched". Is that right? seem to recall reading that in one of my knife making type books.
