Tactical / SD Flashlights - show off your Faves?
I have one here that, once I get my oldschool 'brick' digital camera batteries replaced, pix will be taken and posted here soon plus a little trivia regarding my choice and its specs...
Size is medium-compact, belt-worn or pocket carried, but some ones I used to carry were Brinks, and later - MagLite large heavy aluminum five 'D' cell makes when I worked in apartment complexes managing maintenance dept's and had to walk rounds on the properties at night doing security checks alongside another maintenance department employee when we were on call -- outfitted and uniformed identically.
(Worked some sizeable and rough communities, and well before cell phones -- we had the big motorola two-ways and a central base unit at the main office building.)
=================================================================
In the mean time, any input regarding individual choice, why you chose yours, and some pearls of wisdom on them concerning SD carry and usage would be very appreciated..!!
Thanx / SB ;-)

I EDC a Novatac 85T. It is bright, and simple, but multi level and even has an annoying strobe if I want one (which I generally don't but it may have some SD useage). It runs on 1 rcr123.
For pistol I use an Insight Procyon because it works, and because I got it at a very good price. For shotgun I have a SF 951 light.
For patrolling a property if I were ever in need of doing that, I have a MagLED 2D that is just right for thumping heads.

Now that it's warming up, I'm carrying a single-cell Fenix P2D in my pants pocket, with a spare battery in a pill fob on my cable keychain. This is very compact, and surprisingly bright on 'turbo'. It's discontinued now, but I'm sure Fenix has a replacement.
When I wear a coat, I've got either a SureFire or something AA in my inside pocket (Fenix, Jetbeam).
*edit* Previously, I didn't address the original question very well. If I needed a flashlight that had to be bright enough to possibly see something at quite a distance (and possibly temporarily blind someone who was closer, and SEE what was in their hands), and reliable enough to not fail because that could have dire consequences, I would carry a SureFire. Period. Either a multi-mode like the E2DL (good high, good low for extended runtime), or one of the P/C/M/Z/G series. Of the latter, I would buy the cheaper incan version, and then replace the lamp with a Malkoff led drop-in, which comes in different brightness levels. Right now Gene Malkoff is revamping his product line, and his products tend to be out-of-stock.
Gene Malkoff also makes some very bright, and very reliable drop-ins for the Maglite. His current version will provide constant regulated output for over 3 hours in a 2xD cell, and over 6 hours in a 3xD cell.

I have had a SureFire 6Z with me 16/7 for more than a dozen years. I upgraded it last year to a Malkoff M60 drop-in. It has had two or three replacement tailcaps and two replacement bezels due to accidental damage in use. The most recent replacement bezel was a hex (booo) with a Pyrex window (yay). Oh, and a couple of replacement lanyard loops due to damage. All these parts were replaced at no cost by SureFire under warranty. I have a pile of SureFire lights ranging from an M6 to an E1e and E1L but the 6Z is my day in/day out "tactical" light.
I carry a Surefire G2 with a Mcklicy GITD tailcap, Solor force 300 Lum 5 mode (strobe-sos) bulb, Tactical head and lanyard ring. Plus 2 other small flashlights for car and backup. Romison and Nebo.
Also a SOG powerlock multi tool, 3 Spydercos and I am getting a molle sheath to attach my Swick2 and that's my EDC..In my Pocket is a backup light and a paramilli.

I carry a Surefire C2 with a Malkoff drop in (M30W). In the office this is too big so then it is either an upgraded HDS B60 (probably B200 now :D ) or a Quark tactical AA in aluminum or titanium.
Surefire:

Quark (alu):

HDS:

Flaslights are mostly for utility, but can be an aid in a violent situation as well

i'd love to have more highend flashlights, but i'd rather spend my money on :spyder: . some of these are cheapies, but they serve the purpose. they're not really defensive oriented lights but could be used as such.
first is a sf e2e, my most expensive light. very bright but the batteries are expensive.
next is a rayovac 3 watt light. it runs on 2xaa. very bright and affordable.
in the middle is a nebo single aa light. i bought this on clearance at the battery store. it has a gitd button that makes it easier to find in the dark. it's pretty bright for a single aa.
next to it is a river rock single aa light that i got at dicks for @ 20 bucks. bright with a pocket clip. i carry this one all the time.
on the far right is a coleman 115 lumen light i got at wallyworld. it takes 2x cr2 batteries. this is the brightest light i own. i was very impressed with its function vs. a 26 dollar price tag.
and by the bed is a 4x d cell maglight thumper.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, even if it is wrong.
Can’t compare to the Surefire, but battery life on the LD20 is good. When the batteries do go, the flashlight starts doing weird things, which is the sign of a dying battery, but still puts out a ton of light till you can replace the batteries. Not like those hardware store flashlights that start dying a few minutes after you put in new batteries. A computer chip in the LD20 monitors battery usage, so you still get tons of light from old batteries.c.joe wrote:Nice pictures everyone.
Quick question. How does the Fenix LD20 compare with the Surefire E2D LED Defender?
What about battery life?

Fenix Flashlight superior to surefire.
Can't compare to the Surefire, sorry, it's the other way round the Surefire does not compare to the equivelent Fenix which would be the PD30, half the price, twice the Flashlight.wingspar wrote:Can’t compare to the Surefire, but battery life on the LD20 is good. What I meant is that I can’t compare my Fenix flashlights to Surefire flashlights because I’ve never used a Surfire flashlight, so I can’t compare them. I didn’t think there was any other way my post could have been interpreted.merthyrmafia wrote:Can't compare to the Surefire, sorry, it's the other way round the Surefire does not compare to the equivelent Fenix which would be the PD30, half the price, twice the Flashlight.
Surefire has been around a long time, and makes excellent lights from what I’ve heard. I just have no experience with them, so I can’t compare them with other lights.
I did compare my Fenix lights with a common Mag Light in a video review. Mag light lost big time. My Fenix Flashlight Review Video.

Having owned both Surefires and Fenix lights I disagree :pmerthyrmafia wrote:Can't compare to the Surefire, sorry, it's the other way round the Surefire does not compare to the equivelent Fenix which would be the PD30, half the price, twice the Flashlight.

PS! The E2D he is talking about in the review isn't the E2D Led version asked about in this thread. (I'd take either over the PD30 though)
