I've breezed through a couple of recent EDC threads here, mostly for the eye-candy, LOL. :D I've noticed a dearth of pistols (or revolvers ) Now, I want to make sure that don't come across as offensive in ANY manner. However, with many posts related to MBC, and the like, I would think there would be more gunners here. :confused:
So, if you don't carry, what's the reasoning? Moral {can't take a life}, Political {don't believe we should}, or Legal {unlawful in your a.o.}?
IF this topic is in any manner out-of-line here, smack my wrist and I'll move on. :)
Gun carry is a personal preference and while I would the places I go are seldom even at risk of aggressive pan handling. I'm already packed full of other weight and can't safely open the mail with a .38 .
Still, I bet more people carry on these forums than expected. It's just in our edc nerd-ery we are more curious about watches, knives and keychain tools.

Sure Victor there are lots of guys here that have handguns and carry as well, and their favorite knives too...Today I'm carrying a S&W 340PD, a Ruger Sp101 and a NAA.22 mag along with my usual assortment of bladed defensive tools. I don't EDC a pistol/revolver because of a lack of funds and my belief that it is unneeded right now. Weight is also a deterrent to me.
I know some will argue with my sentiment, "no one knows when something bad will happen, so always be armed," but I just don't feel that way right now. I live in a low-crime area and don't really venture into dangerous situations. I'm sure time will change that; especially since I plan on becoming an officer by the end of the year.

Okay, that's probably the case, LOL. If I could afford it, watches would be yet another passion. :D
besides not having my liscence yet, in Canada it is illegal to carry a hand gun any where besides directly to and from the range and home. Unless of course you are an officer, security guard etc and have authorization to carry.
I never leave the house without my .357 with custom grips, especially on a hot day in the city...
Seriously though I believe in the right to carry, and I'm a Limey who lives in the states. The UK laws on knives and guns are ridiculous and an infringement of freedom.

Yeah, there are plenty of stories like that ... UK soldiers who serve in Afghanistan are not even allowed to bring back knives that they take into the field when they finish their tour... it's just madness.
There are plenty of people here who I wouldn't want to own handguns but to not even have a licencing system for ownership seems ridiculous to me (it is possible to get a license for a rifle) but too many people are happy to surrender freedoms on the basis that "it's done to keep you safe".
Here carrying a locking knife is very unwise, unless you have a cast-iron 'good reason' to have it in your possession OR you want to take the risk that you won't get stopped by the police any time. The sad thing is that, the law was actually framed by people who went on record that they wanted to allow the carry of locking folders (it's logical - they are safer) but later the Courts ruled that a locking knife was no less dangerous than a fixed-blade and, as the law was phrased vaguely, they allowed a change to basically ban locking folders from EDC.
Not allowed. But even if it is, I don't know if I will because it's a big and heavy chunk of steel, I don't even like buck 110 because it's weight 7 oz.

Well my reasoning is simply I am not old enough to purchase a handgun yet. I have 11 months until I can buy a handgun and then get my conceal carry license. Which I plan on doing right when I am of age!
I do have a Remington 870 12 guage... but thats just too big to edc
Very difficult and expensive to get a legal firearm in Belgium. Self defense is not considered a valid reason. Legal carry of a gun is only legal for cops or some armed guards during work hours. Only the criminals carry full auto AK's and handguns in Belgium

I own firearms and recently bought first pistol. I took class so I could get CCW, but am undecided about whether to get concealed carry permit--if I do it, it'll be because I want to exercise the right, not because I feel like packing would make me any safer.
I'm sure there are many here that carry and just don't say anything. We enjoy relative anonymity on the internet, but it's not complete by any means.
Knives are a secondary interest for me when compared to firearms. I use a knife daily and thankfully don't have to use a firearm daily. However my interest is slanted the other way.
There are a decent number of threads here in off-topic that relate to guns. They're not daily by any means and you generally see the same names posting on them, but they're here. My rifle club just started shooting our informal competitions a few weeks ago. We shoot every other week and the format and "game" changes every time. I may have to start posting about them, as long as I do well on that week. :D
2) I travel light (especially compared to a lot of people on this forum :D ). One knife at a time, single car key, money clip instead of a wallet, simple Timex watch, etc.
3) My "around town" philosophy is different from my "backwoods" philosophy. In the backcountry I take what I need to handle the situations I can reasonably predict - likely or unlikely. My EDC kit, however, consists of what I am likely to need. Starting my car, paying for stuff, and knifing open some mail or packaging are all things I expect to do. Shooting (or intimidating) someone or something is not on the list of tasks I regularly perform.
I'm not saying this approach is right or wrong. I often admire those that are always prepared for anything. It's just not for me.
I don't own a gun its by choice I do however have my CCWL I mainly got it so I can carry what ever spyderco I want size of blade, fixed, etc. Also in most cases if you have a gun and your attacked would you really have the time to pull it out? It may be a silly question but I do wonder if you would. Or any type of weapon for that matter. I guess if you see something about to happen you can act and pull out your weapon.
I know that a lot of people on the forums disagree, but I really don't feel the need to carry self defense tools (not only guns). I also didn't grow up with guns and its a very hard/expensive hobby to enter without that background.
I think I now have more birthdays than guns, but it is a near thing. I used to carry one all the time when I was carrying the money from work, which at times amounted to several thousand dollars in cash. My current job doesn't require me to carry cash and has a "no weapons" policy, but the health insurance is paid for, so I can tolerate not lugging my cannon around.
I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.
Carry permits in my country are very hard to get. The main problem being that there are no clear objective requirements. You are asked to submit the same basic documents needed for a gun ownership permit (clean criminal record, proof of lawful income, certificate from a firearm instructor) plus a letter explaining why you should be granted a carry permit.
A board appointed by the federal government reviews your letter and decides whether your reasons are good enough or not. Five or ten years ago, anybody who applied with a more or less sensible reason would be issued a permit and the yearly renewals were automatic. However, the past two presidents have been anti-gun and the review board has been instructed not to issue any permits.
Only big companies or people with well placed contacts are able to reliably get their permit issued or renewed each year.
My carry permit expires in a couple of months, I don't know if they're going to renew it or not (I got it thanks to the nice folks at the Israel embassy, I worked for them part time and they have a fantastic pro gun policy). Just applying costs a bloody arm and a leg, about a third of my monthly salary!
