I'm an admirer of Spyderco's designs. Using them is like immersing yourself in music or studying a painting in a museum. I buy some "fine" art but my preference is for usable art.

You guys who love the Lum, explain it to me. I actually own one and I still don't get it. What's the big attraction?
I look at it and think, "My hand's going to slide forward onto that blade!" To me it looks like one of Spy's most dangerous blades, safety-wise.
What am I missing?

Oh, the CF looks yummy :D

Don't know if I can put it into words, but:
I just love the wide leaf blade and the overall "package", it "fits" me well.
It is a great slicer(required of me).
Haven't cut myself yet :) , but then I don't stab things, this isn't a defense knife. Oh, I also put jimping on the spine for more traction.

Gents,
I say the Lum is more for a pull cut rather than a thrust.

I dream the dream of steel and blade. Now I'm dreaming it awake too.

Lum Chinese = James Bond
Carrying the Lum Chinese makes me feel like I'm wearing a tuxedo -- it's just impossibly elegant. I have the black ZDP version, and it's a scalpel, not a hatchet. So laser-sharp I can't imagine needing to apply enough pressure to slide up the handle. Absolutely hoping to get both the CF and large versions... and I normally only buy one variant of each model I like.
The smooth flowing lines of the knife make it one of the nicest-looking production knives I've seen. That it's a great cutter doesn't hurt. Never had problems with the grip on it. Just don't stab.
I'm not sold on the bigger one yet -- the current design is the perfect size as it is -- but that CF looks lovely. I've been wanting one with something other than a metal handle for a while. :)

Lots of folks never imagine or expect an accident. It is entirely possible to hit something hard inside something that's softer, and have your hand move forward a half inch, if you happen to be cutting in a forward motion at the moment.christoph wrote:So laser-sharp I can't imagine needing to apply enough pressure to slide up the handle.
The idea it would only happen during "stabbing" is another straw-man argument.
Sure, if you're careful, and choose your cutting tasks with care, no problems. Frankly I don't mind the bit of additional insurance that finger cutouts, or a choil, or a hilt, give me.
However I do agree it is an extremely pleasant knife to look at. Maybe that's what counts most to its admirers.
If I were to carry mine, I'd certainly consider something like Gull's modification; at least a little jimping for grip, and a tactile reminder that you're getting close to the edge!
Nice job, how did you do it?

The opinion of the current knife also seems to hinge on the size of peoples hands. People with small/medium size hands like mine seem to find the grip on the Lum secure enough; but for people with larger hands the design does not fit as well.
I love my Lum in ZDP-189 and it feels like I am carrying a razor in my pocket it is so sharp, but that is also how I treat it. It is a fine cutting machine and should be used as such.

I love them enough to buy more than one... Pre-need replacements like a fellow forummer says. I carry one if I'm in dress pants and need something larger than my Dragonfly. It's very slim and doesn't cause excessive bulging which seems to show more on non-pleated pants. I don't think they were meant for hard use or utility.
The Lum Chinese in vg-10 was my first Spyderco. It is so elegant and cuts so well. I'll be looking seriously at any future release of this model. I'm not into tactical too much anyway.......C

I'd love to see a CF SLIPIT version and have the chance to EDC one - those lines are just beautiful ... and, as others have pointed out, it isn't designed for point-first use, only cutting, so a lock isn't necessary - maybe just a subtle choil :D
My spydies: Squeak, Tenacious, Terzuola, D'Allara, UKPK CF peel-ply pre-production, UKPK CF smooth pre-production, UKPK G10 orange leaf-blade, UKPK FRN grey drop-point, UKPK FRN maroon leaf-blade, Bug ... all PE blades :)
And the knife (or just the blade) mounted in your machinist's vise? And you dialed the head on your mill down in steps, and ran the X axis up against the wheel to a certain depth? Did you first dress the wheel so it had a round profile?gull wing wrote:How I did Jimps?:
A 3" fiber reinforced cut off wheel mounted in my Micro Mill.
Is that more or less how it went? Would like to do the same...I have a small mill (X3).

For me the attraction lies in the combination of looks and function. Yes, it doesn't have a guard or deep choil to protect your fingers against a 'sudden stop' while piercing the blade. Like a Puuko, this knife has its functional limitations, but the people who use one generally take this limitation into account when cutting. From a purely functional standpoint a Delica or Military can't be beat, but the Chinese Folder adds more ´class´ and ´fun´ to the mix. YMMV of course.
