Doubt? Didn't I just say I trusted the "Spyderco Special Announcement" (in capital letters to boot)
It does make one wonder why there would be a "Special Announcement" that cannot be quoted or linked to. . . that is, a hypothetical one lacking my total trust.

Well it makes me appreciate the Sage all the more for it's incredible quality at a street price of under $100. To bad they couldn't square the circle of expensive materials, adequate quality and low(er) price point for the Chicago and Cat.

Tom from Spydercovt informed me of this by email this morning, he'd just been told by Spyderco. Devastated, was after a Cat then when there weren't many around, set my sights on Chicago now I'm gonna lock in the Meerkat as my office LBK. Hope they make a comeback of sorts as I dig CF.
Then again, I know some people have raised concerns regarding quality control from that specific Taiwanese manufacturer. I can't recall off the top of my head, but I think somebody posted a thread on the subject recently.
I hope this means that they're going to make some G10 lavas instead.

Since some folks are chiming in now with additional confirmation, I suppose that just means that there will be a LOT of these two knives at the next Factory Seconds sale...!

I agree, there is no reason to tarnish Spyderco's rep.
This factory(China), it seems, are "the not quite ready for prime time players". There were rejections by Spyderco(sent back to China), and in my case, an otherwise decent knife that would not stay locked. The replacment knife locked but there were lots of flaws. As the blade was ground too thin and the tip too pointed (fragile) and others.
I like the idea of a small "Sage like" knife(that's why I bought one), and a lower price is good as well, but this factory is a bum.
I thought about picking either the Cat or Chicago a few times, but either they were out of stock at my favorite dealers or people were over paying on the big auction site and many times for seconds. Some of the close ups of the scales and F&F made me hold off and I don't regret it. One of the results of holding off was saving a few more bucks and picking up the Sage 1. I decided that a knife that size will be best served by the G10 D'fly for me.

When I heard this and panickly went through every retailer I could find to get one, I wanted one but never got around to, eventually I found one, at a high price though... But in the end decided not to get it. Living outside the US if there was something wrong with (which would be very probable) it'd be a huge hassle to get it right, especially since they are gone now.
But there was the little collector inside me going "It was a small run so it'll be very collectible and possibly valuable later on." But in the end I'm a user and I don't wan't to buy an inferior product, I might as well put the money on the side and get a Sage I and get way more enjoyment from owning that.
Besides there are more still more highly collectible models coming from Spyderco in the future (Cmon, how could there not?) with higher quality and level of enjoyment. :)
I'm still young, I got plenty of time to build my collection.
It was a notice sent to dealers yesterday. the factory that made them had QC issues, can't get it done elsewhere and still make the price point. thats a double dead end so the two are discontinued.
I'm still seeing them on several internet dealers' websites as of 15:17 ET today?

Wow, Im surprised and Im not. I just got a Cat about a month ago and while I love the size, steel, CF and ergos, the fit and finish is not great. Yes, I know it is a great value for the materials used in it - and you cant get Sage quality for bargain basement price. Im EDCing this knife right now and its become my office EDC much of the time, but I would have rather paid double+ for better fit and finish. Sorry to say that. Hope they retool and take it up a notch - wont be as affordable, but everyone will be happier.

People were paying a good chunk of change for these on the big auction site. For only $20 more I got a brand spanking new Sage. Not all of them were "bargains" it seems.

I could not believe the prices I saw some of the Cat/Chicago seconds going for!! It was absolutely nuts. But I got my Cat second for $32 and I like it better than my $70 Sage, so it was at least a bargain for me! :)
I'd like to see them continue at the same price point but with the intended quality and less expensive scale materials. If these models are intended to be entry level priced but quality has to be sacrificed to keep it there, the fancy carbon fiber is the most obvious thing to axe. Hopefully the price difference between CF and equally (or more) functional G10 would be enough to buy the needed extra quality.
I just ordered if all goes well a Chicago from an online retailer can't mention where but they still have a few left. This was after I had heard they were discontinued and had quality issues. We'll see about all I can really say. Anybody with experience with the production flaws in the Chicago. So far heard fit and finish issues,???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
