Mystery Spyderco Fastener... Yeah, the one you've all seen...

#1

Post by razorhunter »

Guys,
I am sure this has been discussed on these forums before, but I have honestly no idea what terms to search for, regarding this subject.
Anyhow, I have a Salt 1, which has that infamous "phillips-head-like" fastener holding the clip onto the yellow FRN handle, and I've always wondered what tool is used to remove this mystery fastener? I think one of my old Natives I once owned, also had this very same fastener on it as well.
Does Spyderco offer a driver for this fastener?
If not, then I'm betting that the industrial supply houses (MSC/ENCO/McMaster Carr/etc) carry a driver for this fastener, unless of course, it's a proprietary Spyderco fastener???
I think however, that I have seen this fastener at some point in my machining days, years ago though, so I am betting it's available commercially?
Does anyone know what this fastener is called, and what tool is used for it? Does Spyderco offer it?
Thanks for any help guys.

I think it's called a barrel screw. You can press your thumb against one side and turn the other with a penny. The back of a Dragonfly works great too.

Yup, the tool for it will literally cost you a penny.

Is there a way to use the spine of a blade to possibly turn one of these? I have one on my PS, and i'm curious to know if it'll work. Any pics of attempts?

I've always used a quarter wrapped with black electrical tape to keep from marring the bolt.

I will have to think more about the taped coin option. That sounds like an upgrade.
