"Pocket coin" EDC suggestions?

#1

Post by Erminio »

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for an EDC fitting into the "pocket coin" of my jeans - Chicago seemed just fine but I'm reading horror stories about assembly and finish: rough thumb hole, chipped carbon fiber, misaligned blades or screws...so, would you suggest another Spyderco (in production, if possible) to that purpose? E.g. the Leaf Storm?

Thanks!

I hear the Chicago/Cat are MUCH better than they were. At $30 or so they were a nice "sum of all parts" product even before the QC updates.

I personally like thin SS handled blades and ladybugs for that purpose. A Ladybug is small and disappears as does the Spin or Cricket. The later two IMHO are some of the better little knives Spyderco has made to date. You can snag a spin for about $32 these days due to being discontinued...which is nearly criminal =)

As mentioned the best ones are the thin ones. The Cricket and Spin are amazing and have clips even.

Goodluck with your choices! I'll let someone else comment on the current fit/finish of the Chicago and Cat.

I would recommend either a Dragonfly or Leafstorm.

I've owned a Dragonfly and they're fantastic little cutters. The FRN versions are extremely light and compact. The only thing I dislike about them are the molded clips. They feel fragile, and some of them don't retain well on thin pants. I haven't handled a G10 Dragonfly, but I'm sure the wire clip is an improvement.

As for the Leafstorm, I haven't had the chance to pick one up yet, but from what I've read, they're wonderful little knives. The only downside with the Leafstorm is that you may not like the ergonomics of the handle. A lot of people have to resort to a three finger grip. I'd recommend either checking one out in person, or searching for reviews on YouTube. There are quite a few videos demonstrating the various grip techniques.

Thanks everyone so far for your time and feedback...currently the G10 Dragonfly seems the best choice...

I carry a leafstorm in my jean watch pocket most of the time and when I dont I use a pepperless salsa although those are getting harder to find. Lots of great suggestions in so far, I just prefer liner locks to lock backs.

Spin and Cricket are both great knives! I have and use both. I also have a SE Ladybug H1 which is nice too.

That said, I only carry the Cricket and Spin. Spin for when I play golf, Cricket for when I play dress up. They are exceptional little knives. Fit and finish are flawless. The Ladybug is nice, but I put that in my first aid kit.

Kiwi is my number one choice for a coin/watch pocket knife. The CF ones can still be found fairly easily. Others I have carried there are the Micro Dyad, a Kopa with the clip removed, and a Lava. Lots of other small Spydercos that would fit in there nicely. In addition to those I've already mentioned, the Baby Goddard, Cat, Chicago, Cricket, Dragonfly, Ladybug III, Leafstorm, Meerkat, Poliwog, Spin, and Urban are all either current production or recent and easily found Sprint runs.

Which one is best for you depends mostly on your personal tastes and budget.

My choice for watch/coin pocket carry, for a couple of years now, is a Ladybug attached to a Vicorinox Classic SD. Naturally, one can choose many colors so it never get boring. This combo has proven perfect for use among NKPs.

The balance is a pretty smart knife. If it's not to far off for you, maybe wait for that? I REALLY like the way the kuhkri cuts and the balance seems to follow the same angles.

Cricket SE, Dragonfly, Micro Dyad and Spin PE are my three main suggestions. If you do not mind cutting the bottom seam out of that pocket, you can usually fit a Military in that position. Just a thought.
