Sterilizing a knife?

#1

Post by Ben_1323 »

I just removed the black coating of my Becker BK2 using paint stripper. That stuff is highly toxic, so I was wondering what I should use to make the blade safe again (clean enough to use for food prep). Any help?

Soap - water - rubbing alcohol. Perhaps a little mineral oil once it's clean. Just my thoughts, hope this helps!

Thanks, that's good to hear because it's exactly what I was thinking. :)

I did the same to my RAT RC-4, soapy water is what I used, and it turned out fine. Maybe you could post some pics when you've done? I'd like to see how it turns out 'cos I've just bought a BK7 and was thinking of doing the same again.

To sterilize to use with food you will have to use a soak in absolute boiling water with soap at the minimum.

I would also tell you to maybe use an autoclave if you have access to one.

Or some medical grade cleaner used for human skin surfaces.

Thanks for the replies. I've already rubbed it down with alcohol, so I guess I'll boil it now. I'll post pics when I'm done.

The only way to sterilize against the bacteria its leave the object in an hight spectrum product disinfectant against bacteria for surgical tools, depending from product the time request. And in second time use an autoclave as Fims said, but this is the protocol to sterilize a hight contaminated tool as a surgical tool in contact with skin, blood or biological liquids humans or animals. But in your case i dont think want be necessary such treatment.

About homemade sterilization : Autoclave can be replaced with a normal steam spot you can boil with a small amount of water your tools in a steam spot for not less than 35 minutes so you will have a sterilization under steam in an higter temperature than 120° (248 F - 393 K)

Be sure about water amount because if will dry all the water you will damage your tools.

Well it's not like I'm going to be performing surgery with it. As far as bacteria goes, if I can wash my silverware and kitchen knives with dish soap and eat with them, then I can do the same for this knife.

All I want to do is make sure all the toxins from the paint stripper are gone.
