H-1 Folder with Titanium Handle
H-1 Folder with Titanium Handle
I made a comment about this in another thread but I figured it deserved its own. I think it would be awesome to see a new H-1 model with a titanium handle. It could be a cool high-end addition to the Salt line. It would be a great alternative to the FRN handled knives for a variety of reasons:
- It would be stronger than FRN and provide a new product to those of us, like myself, who prefer a strong, rigid handle with no flex (my Salt 1 has significant side-to-side blade play).
- It that doesn't require liners. So it would retain the simplicity of the FRN Salt series and there wouldn't be any worry about sand, dirt, etc. getting in between the liners.
- It's corrosion resistant. So it fits in perfectly with the current Salt series. I'd also like to see screw construction as well. The screws and hardware can be rust-proof just as the pins are in the current Salt series.
My final thought: The only downside I can think of is cost. Obviously, titanium is expensive, and the knife would have to be made in Japan because of the steel. But I think there would be a lot of interest in a knife like this.
What do you guys think?

I like it with the only exception being that wet titanium is slick (well, like wet steel). It wouldn't make for a great worker knife at least around maritime/dive applications. You could also do G10 (non lined), rubber/g10 inserts, or G10 scales on some type of non-rusting scales.
As for the overall strength of titanium it's ok stuff. Awesome in the strength/weight ratio which is it's claim to fame. In thicker stock it will scratch but should be quite tough (like Sebenza/Sage2 scales). I still think FRN will take more abuse per pound and bounce back. Flex or blade-play doesn't always mean weakness. There is a ton of flex in a fencing foil.
Good idea though :) I like the concept of a high-class Salt regardless of how they do it. I'm a HUGE fan of titanium and CF but more per application. Like valvetrain and body panels on race cars. :D

titanium/g-10
What about a combination like the leaf storm; titanium with integral lock and g-10 on the other side for grip? Because I would want something like this for boating, fishing camping applications I would look for thumb choil for greater control.

Those who are justifiably worried about "slippery when wet" titanum handles, could do a lot worse than a design with a fingerhole... :o
There is a thread requesting a redux of the Warren Thomas Karambit. I think that knife with an H1 blade and ti handles would fit the bill perfectly. I've seen that many are quick to dismiss the UTILITY of such a design, defering it in their minds to MBC only, when in fact the Karambit design was originally utility in nature, for cutting line and nets or gutting fish. It may take some getting used to, but that was part of the fun for me. :p Thanks to :spyder: for expanding my horizons!
