I would recommend that you switch to Tru Oil or Watco oil. BLO does not have the resins in it to create a hard lasting finish. BLO is primarily used to bring out color in wood grain, then it is top coated with something that will dry hard and keep a lasting finish. If the wood soaked up the BLO and it is leaving a tacky finish, it is time to switch to a oil that will leave a hard dry finish. No need to continue using the BLO. One coat of Tru-oil and that knife will be ready to do some work!

Hector, I will be switching to a hard drying finish after a few more days of drying. Since I already have some oil based poly, I'm going to try that. I looked for Tru Oil locally and didn't find any.

Dont do poly, it is a topcoat type finish. It is also not water proof. If it gets wet, it will yellow, like putting a drink on a nice wood coffee table. You can find TRU oil at any store that sells guns. Even walmart

Thank you for the warning about using poly. I've been going to home improvement stores to search for suitable finishes. I did find some Watco Teak oil finish. Is that what you're referring to? I'm seeing good reviews of this product.

I found someone's posts touting the virtues of this Minwax wipe-on poly and how great it was for his gun stocks so I figured it was good to go.

I just tried to wet sand using the Watco Teak oil finish after regluing the large cracks. Will repeat the procedure tomorrow. The cracks in my 1st BC are just too large to clean up completely.

Got luckier with my second, 2 thin cracks that seem to be closing on their own. I'll wait before I try to seal that.

I am a complete novice at wood finishing :o

I ordered mine when they first came up for sale on the Spydie website. When I received it, there was a crack on one side of the handle that extended to the other side of the brass fitting. Also it appears that the handle with the crack shrunk a bit because I can feel the bottom of the tang. I read that a suggestion was to leave it out in the open for a few days and the crack might close up. Well, it's been a few weeks now because I forgot I left it out. I just checked it and the crack is closed up. Also the wood must have expanded because it is now flush with the bottom of the tang. I guess the warmer climate is good for this type of wood. I'm in Kalifornia.

just got my bushy this morning! one side seems to have no flaws at all, the other has a fairly substantial crack. i expect it to close up a little at sea-level, so in a week or so ill cheak about some CA glue to fill the crack. sorry for the crappy cell phone pics.

Gawd you guys in the US are lucky - because I ordered one from UK, and tax plus admin fees are about 30 -35 USD and another 25 USD for shipping on the top of the BCUK Spyderco price. x-(

It has been ordered about 2 weeks ago and it is still in the hands of the parcel company people. Hopefully it will be in next 2 -3 days when it is finally in my own hands.

after repair basically allowed to settle for a week then used thin CA in cracks did not coat fully though as prefer oiled finish

My first Spyderco Bushcraft Second came in today! (Somehow I wound up with two on the way - and two sets of Canadian shipping/duty fees )

The handles don't have any cracks in them, but they have definitely shrunk. The tang sticks up just a bit all the way around the handle, and the scales have pulled away at the front.









Over all I am very happy with this knife. The Sheath isn't pretty (not ugly either) but it'll see hard use anyway - once I cover the exposed inner rivets with something.

I don't know how I'm going to fix the scales on this one. The first step will be to try and get out all the BLO that dried between the tang and the slabs, then wait for awhile and see what develops. Then superglue and clamp?

Ok, just got mine last week. One minor crack on one scale...had too look hard to find it. One knick on the blade back...at least the first one is out of the way.

Otherwise...PERFECT KNIFE. I love it. Can't put it down. I never would have ventured out to pay list for it, but feel like I have got quite a deal on one **** of a knife as a second.

Got one crack on one side - the other side is perfect. The crack is not that bad. I think these knives were left or stored in some utterly dry place or under dry weather condition to cause the cracks. It happened with my acustic guitar in the far east where it was blood drying dry weather.

But nice blade though - chunky and substantial. Ergonomic is excellent. Yeah worth the wait and all the extra charges & hassles ?????? Well well.....
