Spydie Recommendation

#1

Post by donvito »

Looking for a Spyderco with a blade in size between Dragonfly and Delica, lock back and ffg. Caly jr is perfect, but hard to find in good shape and at a fair price.

Current edc frn Dragonfly. Delica 4 and Persistence get used from time to time.

Included a pic of my small collection.

Thx, V.

Hi V, Others will be able to give better information though this is what I've got for you. The Spyderco Cat ~ C129CF seems to fit your needs, though liner lock, and is the first one I thought of with :
length overall 5 15/16 in. (151 mm) blade length 2 7/16 in. (62 mm) blade steel CPM-S30V
length closed 3 9/16 in. (90 mm) cutting edge 2 1/8 in. (54 mm) weight 2.4 oz. (69 g)
hole diameter 1/2 in. (13 mm) blade thickness 3/32 in. (2.5 mm) handle material Carbon Fiber.

The Spyderco Kopa C92SWP also meets your requirements:length overall 5 13/16" (148mm) blade length 2 7/16" (62mm) blade steel VG-10
length closed 3 7/16" (87mm) cutting edge 1 15/16" (49mm) weight 2.5oz (70g)
hole diameter 7/16" (11mm) blade thickness 1/8" (3mm).

I also thought of the Spyderco MeerKat Blue/Gray FRN ~ C64JBG, though blade length doesn't meet your requirements and it's a phantom lock. It is a nice knife with good heft and the only Meerkat with FFG. length overall 5 15/16 in. (135 mm) blade length 2 in. (51 mm) blade steel VG-10
length closed 3 15/16 in. (84 mm) cutting edge 1 3/4 in. (44 mm) weight 2.5 oz. (67 g)
hole diameter 15/32 in. (12 mm) blade thickness 3/32 in. (2.5 mm) handle material FRN.

Just my .01 worth, Dan

Thanks Dan for your quick reply.

My primary reason for going with a sub 3 inch blade and lock back is due to legality issues in NYC. Most liner locks can be flicked open and can be confiscated, they tend to call them "gravity knives" which is inaccurate, but won't stop them.

I've also looked at the UKPK and Urban (the later is more appealing), but will go for a locking folder while I can still legally carry one.

The new frn Delicas in new colors are going to be ffg?

To add to Qcrazy - the Kopa is a lockback (midlock) and fits your size need. Only thing is it is more of a 'gent's' knife. Nice scales, bolsters, etc. The good part about that is it looks high end, so people would tend not to think of it as aggressive. The bad part is you might not want to get it dinged up.

Have you tried a Lava or the sprint run Meerkat? It is a very small blade, but works very well.

What about a Caly 3? It's a gentleman's knife, but with a great blade.

CF Kopas can still be found on eBay at very attractive prices and meet all your other specs. FWIW, the Calypso Jr's blade is exactly the same length as your Delica 4's. There is currently a FFG G-10 Delica 4, and FFG FRN ones should be available within the next few months.

NYC law specifies 4" blade limit, at least on paper, so the 3" blade of the Caly 3 would also be "book legal" there. Problem is, the written law there has already been so badly distorted by the police that nothing is 100% safe. Not even the UKPK and Urban, which in theory would be the safest options for NYC carry since they do not lock.

As an FYI the Delica is sub 3", it is 2 7/8", so you should be good in a place with a 3" blade restriction.

I'm looking forward to the new frn ffg Delicas in new colors. One of the reasons I was looking at the Caly jr was because of the grind, blade length and shape, still on a lookout for one. Caly 3 is also on my list. Thx, V.

Donvito,

I started out looking for a larger Dragonfly.

Delica was just a bit large. Persistence is a terrific buy, but it's too heavy for regular EDCing.

Found a Caly Jr. that I thought was just about perfect. But they are discontinued and the ones I found are just too expensive.

Then three days ago I got one of the new CATs that I had backordered......Didn't think I would like the linerlock, but I was wrong! It's a dream to operate.

Size is even better than the Caly Jr. for EDCing. Feels great in my hand or pocket. Quality does Spyderco proud.

And the price? That's the best part. I can stop searching for older, smaller models at inflated prices. I'm already planning to get a backup CAT.

Hope this helps.

The pro grip fits the requirement of fitting in between the size of a dragonfly and delica. They don't make these anymore but keep your eyes open and one should pop up from time to time.

CAT vs Urban

#18

Post by flash900 »

Fyi -- checking, I see that the CAT is half the street price of the Urban.

The price just makes it sweeter: it's already made it to the top of my EDC list.

Kopa was pretty close to being that.

I would seriously consider a Caly 3 or Kopa. The Caly 3 would be better for all round use whilst the Kopa would be better for more of a gents knife.
