Tenacious Maintenance Question

#1

Post by roof_top_eagle »

So I got my tenacious back in December and I've noticed some corrosion marks starting to form. So I've started to oil the knife daily before I stuff it in my pocket for the day. I love the knife btw!!!

My first question is...is this a normal problem for the Tenacious and 8cr13mov?

I think it could be from fingerprints and oils from my skin on the blade.

The second question I have is what oil would you all recommend using and what maintenance methods?

My current maintenance is using the small microfiber glasses cleaning cloth I keep in my pocket to clean the oils from my fingers off the blade (as well as anyone else who may be fondling it) durring the day and the regular oiling with Heavy USP Mineral oil you get at a drug store that I keep on a microfiber face cloth in a zip lock bag dedicated for knife use.

I really don't have much experience with 8cr13mov or any metal really, pretty much just the 440 stainless of my Leatherman wave that I've had for ages.
I'd rather leave home without my pants than without my knife!

My experience with 8Cr13MoV has been that it is pretty corrosion resistant. I found one speck of rust on one of my blades in the several years of owning and using 8Cr. I think the spot that showed up was likely from leaving some foreign substance on the knife for a few weeks. I do not wipe them down with anything. I usually try to keep all my blades somewhat clean after use though.

Body chemistry varies from person to person. Some here have stated that their sweat/skin oils are particularly corrosive. Perhaps your are in the group?

I use sewingmachine oil, basically a mineral oil.
I just wipe the blade good, add a drop at the pivot-area, and it's good to go.

I should dis-assemble it sometime though, just to see it's inner workings.
I've put it in the dishwasher often enough, after that I oil it a bit. Works fine !

I have a Tenacious that stays in my toolbox in the garage. I regularly wipe it and all my Spydies down with a silicone gun cloth and never had any corrosion issues. The coating also helps keep sticky stuff like packing tape from sticking to the blade.

used my tenacious SE a couple years ago while on oil spill response duty. i cut up some disgusting, crud-filled netting dredged up from the bottom of a harbor... 30 minutes of cutting tasks. thought i rinsed it off pretty good when i was done, but it literally became locked shut with rust and corrosion. it was H1 around the ocean from that moment on...!

I have a little rust on my Tenacious as well. In fact its the only knife I have with rust on, despite having D2, SR101 and 1095 among my knives. I do carry it more and it gets used for nasty things like pineapple.

It has not spread and is more like a discoloration/patina type rust (not rough to the touch) and only in one confined place, so am not too worried. I use mineral oil in the pivot to avoid any problems I can't see.

I have used my Tenacious for a long time now. No rust , but something like streaks or tooling marks have appeared on the Spydie side of the blade. Didn't notice these the first couple of months . Strange.

I use balistol klever oil for my Delica because it's beeing used for food prep and fruit slicing. Perfect stuff, keeps the blade smooth and clean and non toxic. My ladybugs get some WD-40 from time to time. never had any corrosion.

Since this is a tenacious thread, I have a question on how well you like it? Also, how does this steel hold an edge compared to VG-10. I know not as good, just looking for some illustration of the difference.

I love it, it's an excellent knife, the edge retention is decent but you will need to touch it up more often than VG-10

I would say that I touch up my Byrds and 8Cr13MoV Spydies about 2x as often as my VG10 Spydies with similar amount of use.

FYI: I touch up my edges quite often as I like very sharp edges.

I am amazed by the quality and value of the Tenacious. It's a good-looking, grippy (dig the G10) knife with good-sized blade, very heavily built (I don't have a Military or Gayle Bradley for reference, but it is far and away the most stout liner lock I have owned - I thought the Byrd Crow was built well but prefer the heavier duty build of the Tenacious), I find the ergonomics excellent (it really fits my hand saber or reverse grip perfectly upon opening). I am typically a big proponent of the 50/50 choil but the handle shape and the fact that the blade runs all the way to the handle gives a cutting edge that is comparably close to the finger for that sort of work. Love the FFG and the tip is a good compromise between penetration and strength - it is not delicate-feeling like some tips but also no prybar by any means. I have used it regularly as my primary EDC for a couple of weeks (a Spyderhawk H1 SE being the second EDC for cuts that need a toothier edge) and have used it for regular miscellany, carving (just working a couple of sticks into something else at present, nothing really fancy), food prep/eating, and anything else that cmoes to mind and it has done a fine job. I have found the edgeholding to be better than I expected, a little less than VG10 but not bad, and it was easy to get a scary sharp edge on it using my sharpmaker. All in all, I am quite pleased with it and want to try out several other models that are heavily built with a plain edge to play with (I am mostly used to SE knives but am really appreciating the PE more than I had).

If there is a chance of food prep for your knife, I think you are doing just fine with the oil selection. I have not had any rust issues with 8Cr13MoV.
