Rescue?

#1

Post by zenmic »

I'm a long time owner and user of Sypderco Products. I've carried a Rescue for too many years, own several Endura, and have given several Enduras, Rescues, and Q's as gifts to very special people. I even gave a matched pair of Enduras as a wedding gift for the bride and groom. Unfortunatelly a few weeks ago I had to give an airport security person a "gift" of my old original zytel body that had a molded zytel clip in order to board a plane. Since then, I have been on a search for one. I have called Sypderco and had the pleasure of speaking to at least one of their reps. Unfortunately according to the rep, I am out of luck. I've checked e-bay and everybody is auctioning off the new style Rescue which is being made with a nylon handle and a metal clip. I finally have broken down and bought one of the currently discontinued versions of the Rescue which is the nylon handle and metal clip. Personally I DISLIKE the design of the handle. Unlike the original zytel handle, this one seems to be more functional. This is not to say that the original model was not functional, however, there was an a elegance in the style of original handle; it was more than just a handle. I know that the metal clip and design of the clip was for us "wrong-handed" people (which includes me, since I'm left-handed), however, the clip catches on chairs and my safety belt in my car, as well as comes loose from time to time. In fact I have a divit in the moldeing for the clip already from where the clip has come loose and I've had to re-tighten. I'm sure that the nylon handle is as sturdy and inert as the zytel, but I long for the old open slit handle with a molded clip made out of zytel.

As I had said I had the pleasure of speaking to one of the reps at Sypderco, who told me of the new Rescue coming soon. After seeing the pictures and discussions of the prototype on this forum, I am impressed and can't wait for them to come out. However, I was told that the new Rescue would be using a wire clip similar to the ones on the Salsa and on the Q, but the prototype picture shows the clip will be the current metal screw type. Are there any comments to this?

I am almost willing to pay a collector's price for an old black handle zytel Rescue.

I am avidly waiting for the new version of the Rescue.

Longing for Zytel.

Zenmic ~ Welcome to the Forum. Ye can still buy brand new 'Rescue's' with the plastic clips, apparently, from Hamonoichiba.com in Japan the Proprietor is the excellent Mr Hasegawa and I, and a few other members of the forum, have bought a few knives from him before, infact if Java pops up he'll be able to say if there are any still available as he speaks the lingo (very badly!<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>).

Check out the pic below.

zenmic,
I picked up a couple of the yellow rescues from Hamonoichiba. I acquired them to trade for Q's I don't have(which right now is quite a few). If you do or don't have Q's, or just don't want to deal with Japan, let me know.

Zenmic,
Welcome to <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>land!

If the above suggestions don't pan out for you I still have one of the original Rescues. Unlike you I prefer the Rescue 98, metal clip and new handle shape. My Zytel Rescue is a spare for me so we can work a trade if you want. e-mail me

I think the new Rescue will rock, hesitant about a wire clip though.

Welcome Zenmic,

Al said I was needed here. Although after the left-handed complement above ye may want to reconsider how much help I can render. Al and I seem to be Mr Hasegawa's American, (oops and manly-man Scottish) <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>kuza. Hai! So-desu!

The Rescue is available from Hamonoichiba for Y8,100 which is roughly 67.50 USD. They are available in yellow, orange, or run-of-the-Spydie black with the FRN handles. I will be placing an order with Mr Hasegawa toward the end of July. If you are unable to locate one before and wish me to order one for you contact me via e-mail above and I will help out.

If you want to order directly from Hamonoichiba, go to: http://www.hamonoichiba.com/products/g_ ... ist_e.html.

Once there, after perusing the many splendored offerings, click on the blue Order Method at the top and it will walk you through the payment method. Once Mr Hasegawa confirms your order and you FAX him your CC number, the product will ship and it usually takes about a week to arrive.

Tell Naohiko that Al and John sent you and you heard about him on the Forum. Best of luck and let me know if you would like me to order for you!

How'd I do Al! (And what about Voxnaes' sister - does he have another hot Danish to go with me coffee, joe, mud, pick-me-up, 30 weight, caffeine, drip, unleaded, jolt, black bean soup, liquid stimulant, hook-up, pick-up, rocket fuel, espresso, black ambrosia - java, java, java, java, java!!!!!)

Stay safe! Stay sharp! <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

THANK YOU Al, Boxer93 and Java.

I have been looking on that site as well as trying to use babelfish to translate it. However, since the site uses frames, it is giving babelfish fits. I have been able to find on his site the Rescue 98s, but not the catalog picture that Al posted. If Hamonoichiba.com does have all of those particular blades in stock then I may be making an order for several different Rescues :-).

So who do I need to get in touch with to get this started? I even have a paypal account ready to do.

Thanks all

I've got an old style Rescue new in the box. I've also got one of the ones with the red enamel inlaid in the grooves in the handle. I know that selling is off limits, so i'm not sure if this is okay. Email me if you are interested. I'd let one or both got for what I paid for them.

Samo ~ Both the white and the green Rescue are marked sold out, but it wouldn't do any harm to ask Naohiko if he can source a few rare models from one of his many contacts in Seki City.

Java, I hope that me getting you into the middle man business wasn't a bad thing <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
Samo, I too spotted the white rescue, but it's been sold out for a while.
I inquired about another sold out one (G. Sakai Q) and was told he had no more. Now I don't have Java's fluency with the language. He may be better to get the info from Mr. Hasegawa on where to find some of these 'sold' ones.

I want to thank everyone for their responses in helping me get what I want. I am also interested in what Spyderco has to say about going back to zytel and about the clip for the new Resuce. I may be in the minority here, but I like a blade to either be serraded or be smooth. I don't like the hybird blades at all. Plus I feel those blades are a pain to sharpen :-)

I like the look of the new Rescue. I hope it doesn't have the wire clip that is being rumored though. For a Rescue knife I want a serious clip and I think the wire clip is too weak for this use.

Zenmic,
I've always been a little nervous about plastic clips. I'm worried about them getting bent off line and not being able to fix it. With a SS clip I can remove it and bend it true again ot by a spare and replace the clip if it is too shot.

Zabrewolf,
You are probably thinking of the Q wire clips. The newer ones are nothing like that. I carry a Ti salsa and the clip is very strong and tight. It took months of daily use to loosen it so that it clips in my pocket easier. If you haven't experienced a new style clip you should check one out in person. As for style IMHO it's not as good looking as the metal clips, but the wire clips are also less noticable. In an office environment this is a plus.

I have had this new Rescue 98 for about 5 days now. In those 5 days, I've had to unscrew and straighten the clip back in place twice. The clip has already divited and is distorting the handle where the clip sits. I've even moved my knife from my back pocket to my front and still have to worry with the clip bending and ruining the handle. When I had the zytel one, I never had an issue with the clip breaking or catching on anything.

What can I do to keep this clip from slipping and distorting the handle?

Boxer93 is right. I too work in an office environment. With the zytel clip I was hardly asked what I had on, and with a wire clip the profile is once again lowered. However with this metal clip, it is really obvious that I have a knife of some kind on.
