Could use some help

#1

Post by Cool Breeze »

Hi everybody,

Oke, so this is my first post. Been looking around here for quite some time now. First of all I would like to say that I love this forum! Everybody is so helpfull and kind to each other. Keep up the good works!! :)

I'm, compared to the majority of you, a newbee concerning Spyderco. Well to knives in general, cause i only own spyderco knives. :D

I have a CE Delica 4 (just love that knife), a PE ladybug; and as we speak, a SE H1 ladybug on the way. (very big fan of LBK's).

Could use some help. I'm from Holland and i'm looking for my 'perfect knife'.
Found out that in my area there are not many places that sell Spydies so i'm pretty much confined to the web.

I don't know if my 'perfect knife' even exists but if anyone knows a model that comes close, please let me know.

Oke, this is it:
Handle: Orange or White G10 (does a white G10 even exists?)
Blade: Don't know what its called exactly, but same blade shape as the D4. And if possible in H1.
Lock: Since i'm a lefty a lockback or other ambidextrous lock is a must have. Slippies, well lets say i have some bad experience withe them closing up on me.
Edge: Combo would be nice, and preferably hollow grind
Size: In the range between Dragonfly and Delica (office guy so i can't whip out a sword to peel an apple :D )

I really hope that someone can help me out! :)

welcome,

Sounds like you already have what you really want but with the color factor you should have bought the white Delica 4 CE

Yeah, the Delica really comes close but i would love some G10 on it :) I haven't been able to find a white delica yet. Seen pictures of it here on the forum thoug. Looks really nice.

And, off course, I would like to add some new models to my little collection :D
I would love a ukpk orange (or white) but with a lock on it. That would be about perfect.

Buy a Delica 4 and send it to someone (I'm using Jose in Spain, supermatch38sa) to have white G10 scales made and attached. To get the H-1 is harder, since the Salt 1 is pinned construction, but others have had their pins replaced with bolts and whoever does that can add the new scales at the same time.

edit - it will be expensive as the Delica / Salt 1 has embedded liners. The new scales will have to be routed out in order to fit the liners. And you might look at the 2009 Sprint run of the white micarta Goddard for an off the shelf solution.

I'm posting again because there is a more basic point that should be made. You are delighted with the Delica and the Ladybug, but they are the only Spydies you have. Chances are that you will be just as delighted with many of the other models and you should experience many other models before getting custom work done. As has already been suggested, the Amsterdam mini meet is the place to put your hands on a lot of Spydies and gain a lot of knowledge in a short time.

I think you are right. I love the few spydies that I have, and i'm looking arround to find some more. Love the caly3 for instance but it's more than 200 euro's (about 250/300 dollar at current rate). for a beginning hobby thats quite an investment (i know, some of you probably spend half your paycheck :D ). I think the caly is going to be my new spydie :p

Just got my H1 SE ladybug yesterday! Nice sharp blade. One minor imperfection in the round hole. filed that out with my sharpener, but now I have 2 scratches on the blade right next to the hole. But heck, this is part of my new EDC so it will see some pocket time, not a shelf knife.

I've heard this before, that Spydies in Europe cost 2 or 3 times as much as in the USA. Why is that? Is it tariffs? Buying from US retailers, I would expect a 10% or 15% premium, not 100% to 200%.

I'm guessing it has to do with shipping and handling. The stores that I've seen them on have a couple of models and maybe 2 or 3 pieces per model. so I think that the order is to small for discount, and they calculate that to us as customers.

If I want to buy a spydie online in the USA I pay about 35 euro's (some 50 or more dollars) for shipping alone...

The Euro is about a dollar and a half right now.

Your knife exists! It's Micarta instead of G10 but that's far from FRN. :)

as others have mentioned, you've almost described the wayne goddard white micarta sprint run to a t. after you acquire it, you can track down the white micarta jess horn -- good luck! ;)

took my White Goddard out of storage and also threw in the D4 i think you have.

the blade is i think the exact same length, the handle on the Goddard is a tad smaller.

The only crappy part is that its tip down only and right handed only.

Wow, you guys fond it!
Thats the D4 I have alright.

Very nice. Thanks alot!

I've been reading about the Caly 3 around here. Seeing the positive feedback on that knife, I think one of the two is going to be my new Spydie

Welcome to the forums!

Since you mentioned that you are new to knives I'm wondering if you have a sharpmaker yet or some other sharpening system? I'd suggest you get one. When I mastered sharpening, I noticed that my taste in knives changed.

Do attend the meet if you can, you'll get tons of info on Spyderco and knives in general and you get a chance to meet fellow spyderknuts.

Hi Wouter,

No, I don't have the sharpmaker yet, thinking about it though because i just bought my first serrated blade (and have a combo)

My sharpening system at the moment is a japanese waterstone. A bit difficult to find the right angle but i'm starting to get the hang of it :)

@ Jurphaas I'm hoping i can attend the meeting. but i don't know for shure yet.
