Hawkbills for 2010: From the Harpy To The H-1 Spyderhawk
Hawkbills for 2010: From the Harpy To The H-1 Spyderhawk
Well with the year of our Lord 2009 being just about over with I think it's high time to focus on 2010. The year 2009 was a great year for Spyderco's Hawkbills and 2009 will always to me be the "YEAR of THE H-1 SPYDERHAWK". Brother Clovisc launched an idea that truly grew wings very quickly. And from Spyderco's standpoint it looks like the H-1 Spyderhawk is on it's way to success.
Hawkbill popularity is growing and nobody can argue that. I'm talking to 3 times as many knife users that have bought a hawkbill blade in the past 2 years ( that actually use them too).
I'm wondering what will be in store for us for the year 2010 with Spyderco's growing Hawkbill line up. I would like to hear your thoughts about what might be next in the Hawkbill pipeline and what you all might wish for. I hope Brother Clovisc with chime in with some more great ideas and I truly want his input on the H-1 Spyderhawk so far.
Let's talk Spyderco Hawkbills for 2010. Would you all like to see a fixed blade Hawkbill in 2010?

Long Live the SPYDEREDGE Spyderco Hawkbills RULE!!
My SpyderHawk arrived last week and it's been riding in my pocket ever since. Used it at work to strip a bunch of wire and just finished using it on a bunch of clam-shells opening presents. This is my first hawkbill blade and it takes a bit to get use to but I am liking it more and more every day.
The SpyderHawk is the first Spyderco that is hollow grind that I've owned and used and not sure if it's going to be one of my favourite knives as I think FFG slices exceptionally well. I'm thinking the SpyderHawk is going to be an exceptional work knife as I do work a lot outside and it seems like it will stand up to the torture, we'll see.
At this point in my life I'm not into fixed blades, but that might change some day. For 2010 I would love to see a hawkbill with G10 using the same quality that is used on the Military's, s30v steel and FFG.

Using is believing
You've just reinforced what I've said for a long time about Spyderco's Hawkbill folders Angus :) If a knife user will just try to carry one for at least one week:: and you can go ahead and carry a conventional blade like a Native, Military, JD Smith ect ect... But you will soon find just how functional Hawkbill blades are. The leverage you can get on pull cuts is not only good but it's very controllable as well. Thus reducing the chance of an injury.angusW wrote:My SpyderHawk arrived last week and it's been riding in my pocket ever since. I do use a Hawkbill as a companion blade but I've also had days where all I would carry is a Hawkbill. And I fared well with it. This is truly a case where appearances and looks tend to fool people. You can't judge a knife by it's looks and I've found that out on many occasions. I actually discovered how good a Hawkbill blade was by taking it in the wetlands by mistake. It was the best mistake I ever made.

JD,
You failed to mention the awesome Superhawk in 09' too.
I truly love the hawkbill blades. I have the Harpy in G-10 as well as SS and a Superhawk. I EDC'd the G-10 harpy for years, until I broke the tip on it. I was young back then, and used it to pry something open.
I really want the spyderhawk, but the yellow one is just to bright for my EDC. I loved EDC'ing the harpy, and I know the spyderhawk would be even better with the larger blade, but I am not supposed to carry a knife at work, and the yellow sticks out pretty well clipped on a pair of slacks. I have tried to purchase one in black on the bay, but those go for more than I am willing to pay.
Maybe in 2010 we will see a spyderhawk in another color! Black would be great. I know that the yellow stands out and makes it easy to see, but that is exactly what I dont want, it to stand out.

I like the hawkbill shape, but would like to see Spyderco make a more 'aggressively ergonomic' shape for the scales/liners. More like the Manix2. I love choils and deep finger grooves...

Back In Black
Hector I'm equally perplexed about that issue  They made some of the other Salt models in either yellow or black handles and I'm truly wondering why they haven't made the H-1 Spyderhawk in black. Maybe Mr. Glesser thinks that there would be some confusion over the old original VG-10 SE Spyderhawk that did come with a black FRN handle.Hector Castro wrote:JD,

But it's been out of the line up for so long that I doubt if that would be much of a problem. However Rome wasn't built in a day nor will our perfect lineup of Spyders will be either :D But that's the beautiful thing about this great forum it gives us a direct line to the General himself to consider what we desire. Because if it weren't for this great forum we wouldn't have a Superhawk or an H-1 Spyderhawk either one. Go try that with another big time knife company ( good luck :rolleyes :)
For right now I would like to see the return of the G-10 Harpy with a really decent blade steel. That's the one that currently tops my 2010 wish list.
Yeah I wish the Spyderhawk would come BACK IN BLACK ( not to be confused with an old Classic Hard Rock album :D )
Long Live the SPYDEREDGE Spyderco Hawkbills RULE!!
Most of the features you all like are found in the Superhawk. I'd grab one before it's merely a legend of the past.
The closest thing I could see happening is a Harpy based on the FRN Delica4. You would get screwed construction, liners, and grippier handles. It's prob the most logical step IMO. Well...unless Sal gets the wild hair to throw a sprint run Stretch FRN hawkbill or wharnie our way :p hmmm?

Good 'ole JD causing trouble as always :p
Anyway, I think that a Sprint of the G10 Harpy is in order. Oh and both PE and SE thank you very much
And, as before Clovisc started up the H1 Spyderhawk, I think we need some more reverse S blades. The Cricket is all fine and good, but I think a larger version is in order. What do you think about this:
G10
3.5 in blade
Compression lock
Reinforced tip
Of course I'd also love to see a Sprint Captain with the inward curve in SE, but I think that's just wishful thinking

Now Brother Slice what have I ever recommended in the line of Hawkbills, Dyads and other specialty Spyders that you and I ever disagreed upon :D ??
Right!! None at all. Hey I'm not the "in house" rabble-rouser who does the constant "fly in the ointment" routine. Nor do I try to derail threads of knives I don't like or brothers/sisters I may slightly disagree with. You got me confused with..... Oh Well that's for another time  :D
No just because we succeeded with 2 great new Hawkbills in 2009 which are already legends here in Spyderville will not cause me to rest on my laurels. No it's already time to be planning on the next great Hawkbill to further enhance the world's best Hawkbill lineup produced by any knife company on the planet.
A resurrected G-10 Harpy with a new supersteel such as ZDP-189, M-4, S90V or maybe one of other often discussed super steels that have been recently chatted about. I think the H-1 base has been beautifully covered for the time being i.e. the H-1 Spyderhawk ( which should be the 2009 Spyder of the Year :cool :)
Seriously Slice I think we're on the same page for sure. Carrying my ATS-55 G-10 Harpy is so enjoyable that I can't help but think how good it would be to have one in a newer blade steel. But I opened this thread for all the other Spyder Brethren to chime in with their ideas and input.
Long Live the SPYDEREDGE Spyderco Hawkbills RULE!!
great thread, JD!
i agree -- we are truly experiencing the first official golden age of hawkbills. ladybug hawkbill, tasman, H1 spyderhawk, harpy, and the superhawk (currently at astonishingly low close-out prices!). i picked up four of the H1 spyderhawks, and have been carrying a SE version of the knife pretty much daily since i got the blade. :D
the reliability of H1 + the amazing effectiveness of the hawkbill-shaped blade is a great combination.
it might be cool to see some urban-friendly slipit hawkbills (UKPK hawkbill? or an affordable FRN UKPK hawkbill?)... however, personally, i don't really "need" anything like that, as i live somewhere extremely knife-friendly. an H1 ladybug hawkbill seems like a "must," if you ask me. (a little surprised that the ladybug hawkbill sprint wasn't H1... but it's on my keychain, all the same!) a G10 hawkbill might be cool, as well... but again, not really something i'd "need" (unless it was G10+H1 -- then i'd REALLY need it!!!).
to me, the H1 spyderhawk is the ultimate realization of performance, reliability, and suitability for outdoors/marine cutting chores. it would be hard -- possibly unnecessary -- to top that.
what i'd like MORE would be if 2010 were the "year of the reverse-s" (don't hate me, JD... it's kinda still a hawkbill...). i'd love to see the matriarch make a comeback in the E4 platform... and/or to see a 3"-4" utility reverse S blade. a dodo sprint would be awesome, as well... even an FRN dodo. i believe that reverse-s blades have MUCH more to offer than simply SD (even though they excel in SD settings).
or even better -- if 2010 were the year when spyderco started making ALL of their knives in H1!!!
i also think that some hawkbill fans here on the forums should make some youtube videos showing the usefulness of hawkbills in a range of settings. (i'm not too good at this sort of thing...) might help build interest in hawkbills, and other "unusual" blade shapes.

I think I have been converted to the Hawkbill as I just got a Superhawk and Ladyhawk and looking to get a Tasman Hawk and Harpy. I am wondering if the serrated blade would be the best choice to with the Hawkbill. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks. And thanks JD Spydo for your help on Blade Forums Spyderco page.

We've had a great run this year with the Superhawk, H1 Spyderhawk, and hawkbilled Ladybug. Many thanks to JD for helping make the JD Spydohawk, er, the Superhawk an appeal piece for Sal to make for us afis. Many thanks to Clovisc for doing the same with the H1 Spyderhawk, too. Thanks most of all to Sal for getting these daydreams into our hands where their daily uses exceed our expectations.

This year I've picked up a SE Tasman, SE Spyderhawk H1, PE G-10 Crossbill, and I just ordered a Ladybug HB. Still trying to decide if I want to get a Superhawk while they're still around. The Crossbill is a good work knife, good enough that I don't know if it's worth upgrading.

Depends on what you're using it for, really (Though there's lots of people here who'll say you can never go wrong with serrations. :cool :) .rkh wrote: I am wondering if the serrated blade would be the best choice to with the Hawkbill. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.
Cutting fibrous stuff like vegetation is better with teeth. For finer material (Opening boxes and other packaging), I prefer plain. More of my hawkbills are SE because I tend to use them the most in the outdoors, slaying blackberry vines and the like...

Reverse S is a Hawkbill>> 2010 year of Reverse S maybe??
Hey Brother Clovisc I'm not at all opposed to taking a look at the Reverse S blades which truly are in the Hawkbill category. If you've followed the "Matriarch" thread we had going over at Bladeforums you would realize that I'm very much beating the drum for a new Matriarch in either VG-10 or some other super steel. I've even given a lot of thought as to how good either the Matriarch or Civi either one would be in a laminated VG-10 like Fallkniven uses on some of their great blades. Or any other laminated super steel for that matter. A Dodo Sprint in a different blade steel would be just great IMO as well. I would love to see a Dodo in either M-4 or S90V.clovisc wrote:great thread, JD!

But if they're going to give the G-10 Police model another chance it only makes good sense to give the G-10 Harpy another chance with a very special blade steel.
But would I take a reintroduction of the Matriarch instead??? YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT!!
Long Live the SPYDEREDGE Spyderco Hawkbills RULE!!
I don't see how a premium steel will help anything but raise price and edge retention. I'd rather have corrosion resistance (no thx m4) and I've never heard about dulling probs with the current matriarch or civ. In fact the civilian is made in vg10 now, not sure on the matriarch.
Unless they revamp it, the blade will never be a worker. It was designed for one use only. The premium steels won't make the tip any less likely to snap. I'd rather them revamp or rerelease in gin1, aus6, aus8, etc to keep the price down. Same goes with the Yojimbo.
My 2 cents. I'm an AFI but also believe in accurate market accessment.

Well,
I'm happy, that the Matriarch sprint is being discussed, as well as the Dodo sprint.. (see Sal's casual bombshell thread) of course these are just rumours so far. But IF they ever become true, I'm happy with the basic VG-10 steels etc, to keep the cost down.
Only thing bothering me a little, is that Meerkat never came back as a rev'S sprint. But to null that, we've got the Ladybug Hawk. Still waiting for mine, though.. I think that the postal services around the world are clogged up>= X-mas and all...
But untill any Dodo/Matriarch runs, i'll keep on waiting for the long discussed Matri-Duty-Hawk :D
