Since some of the posts so far seem to be shall we say, less than enthusiastic, I just thought I would mention that many of the models discussed in "Sal's Casual Bombshell Thread" as well as the thread by fellow forum member Blerv are likely several years away. That is, to say that if Sal hints at a particular knife in 2009 does not mean we will see it in 2010. I'm just as anxious and excited as the next guy, and 2010 looks to be a pretty exciting year :)

Nicely done catalog, but it sure looks like I won't be spending much on knives next year.

If you click the icon next to the catalog links you get the 2009 catalog. Maybe something that should be fixed?

Other than that, not too many interesting things, may have to pick up one of those carpenter steel Manix II knives.

IIRC the serrated ones are being discontinued

have you ever handled a zowada? i think it feels completely like a different knife than the native but like you said, "to their own" i always thought if they redid this knife it would be a great auto because that is what it looks like.

SecSpyral wrote:I agree with pretty much everything you said here. I'm confused about the FRN UKPK being hollow ground. I guess to keep costs down? Advertising lightweight, you could make it lighter and a better slicer if it was flat ground. Overall, it makes me spend more because that means I have to send it to Tom Krein.
Yeah this really stinks, I hadn't even considered that it might not be FFG. I was picturing something that looked exactly like the original except with FRN. I'm sure they did it to save money but suddenly I'm just not as enthusiastic about it. On the other hand I may get the G10 version now, so Spyderco may end up making more of a profit from me :p . And at the rumored price you really can't complain... but we do anyways :D
SmoothOne25 wrote:other than ukpk frn and manix 2 foilage green what else is new?
Gotta admit that the thoughts going through my mind weren't too far off from this.
hiredgun wrote:Just some observations. Last year I recall myself and others going crazy over what the new 2009 catalog was going to have in it. This year things are different. There have been so many releases and announcements about releases prior to the 2010 catalog being distributed, that the new 2010 catalog doesn't really have many suprises or "WOW!" factor to it. The only thing that really raised an eyebrow for me was the Zowada. I was interested in the FRN on the new slipits too, but I don't do the slipits so nothing for me anyway to get jazzed about. Not a criticism by any means, because Spyderco has been keeping my heartbeat high and cash reserves low all year long so I can't really complain. Do you all recall the Purple Native? Again, just an observation.

Looking forward to the Endura and Delica FFG 5 color releases soon. That, to me, is something to get excited about.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all.

Yeah I seem to recall there being much more new stuff going on around this time of year in 2008 than now. On the other hand a lot of stuff was released late in the year in 2009 which wasn't in the catalog, and this will probably happen again in 2010/I'm assuming this is what usually happens. We all know how busy Spyderco R and D is and I think half the time they are spending more time deciding what not to pursue than trying to think of new ideas for knives. There are also all of the trade shows coming up, and they always have some surprises to show off around that time.

I don't know how many of the knives listed in Blerv's thread are slated for a 2010 release but I think we should see at least one more Sage out in 2010 for sure.

I think I remember $39.99 being mentioned. Sweet deal! (but I wish they'd up the cost a few bucks to give us a flat ground blade)

Thanks for the heads up. 2010 is shaping up to be another fun year! I'm really liking the Tim Zowada and the Sprint run Manix 2.

Edit,

So you guys think there's less new things going on in 2010 vs last year? Since I only started getting into knives recently, I don't have any frame of reference to compare to.

I'm still looking to get the Paramilitary, FRN Stretch, a FFG UKPK and whatever else comes along that peaks my interest. I don't know about the rest of you, but I really need to slow down. I need to recover from the 40+ Spydie purchases within the last 5 months.

-Much like the thread about liner locks the other day, some posters are making WAY too big a deal about FFG over hollow ground. Not everything has to be or even needs to be FFG. Like anything else, it has its downsides too. Plus, I think it's been established numerous times that FFG adds to the cost and clearly, the FRN UKPK is a lower price point model. Whining about not having prime rib on a spam budget makes little sense.

-When has Spyderco ever had a year where the actual models released to the public are exactly 1:1 with what the first of the year catalog says? There will still be plenty of good stuff beyond the catalog, supplemental guides, special sprint runs, stuff no one saw coming, etc.

-Ti Millie looks great, as do the FRN UKPKs

-Return of the Zowada, that's cool as heck

-Manix "CTS" is intriguing

I dunno, I think it's a solid catalog and am looking forward to the 2010 model year.

Did anyone else have trouble opening the PDF file? Some pages look good, others have text with no pics, others are just blank. I get an error message that says the file contains newer information than is supported by my Adobe, but I thought I had the newest one. I had the same problem with the 2009 catalog. What's a Mac user to do?

All I can say about the FRN UKPK is that I don't care about FFG versus hollow grind. At that price point, I will be able to spread the gospel of :spyder: much more frequently...

Nothing that really excites me to run out and buy it. But there are still a lot of current models that I wouldn't mind buying, just don't have the money to right now. Nothing wrong with the new catalog, we've just had all the surprises revealed already.

at first the hollow grind on the ukpk lightweight turned me off, as others. however, i like gin-1 steel and the colors are cool. more so than the grind i was looking for the bi-directional texture. if the price turns out to be right though its def. on my list. i was more surprised not to see a new sage in the catalog.

even though the catalog isnt full of new models. it will be fun having surprises pop up throughout the year. I HOPE :)

Carbon fiber Zowada? It will be mine. Oh, yes, it will be mine.

And one of those lightweight UKPKs, as well.
