First impressions of the Sprint Run Meerkat

#1

Post by Mr Blonde »

Two great things arrived at my doorstep this week, the new sprint run blue Meerkat and snow. Mind you, snow doesn't fall often here or stay very long. The Meerkat surprised me, I like it more than I thought I would.

Image

The Meerkat follows the Navigator pattern. I'm not a big fan of that pattern: it's kind of pointy and uncomfortable for my grips and the clip is usually non-reversible for lefties and tip-down only. I was seduced by the lovely color so I pulled the trigger. This Meerkat is less sharp or pointy in the hand, because the hande is thicker and FRN is always nicely rounded on the corners. The full flat ground leaf blade makes it a very nice user. It's opened everything I threw at it and it did some nice paring work in the kitchen. Sharpening is very easy and fast, since the grind is thin and the blade is VG-10.

Image

The clip change was easy to do, but I'm still getting trying to get the hang of operating the Phantom lock left-handed. There's no bladeplay in any direction so far. The handle color is a nice turqois kind of blue. It has gotten some inquisitive looks from my better half, and not with the usual 'did you get another spydie' rather 'let me see that'. The deep carry clip is nice, but could have been a pain to retreive the knife from a pocket,if there weren't these nice divots and other gripping points all over the handle. Especially for the money, you get a very unusual but very functional little user. It's hours of fun, even without any actual cutting. I highly recommend it. I'm going to put it in my office-carry rotation.

Dimunitive in size, but big in performance. I just decimated our bi-weekly collection of paper and cardboard for the recycling bin. Lots of cutting and no hotspots on the handle. Edge is still quite sharp.

Whoa, I passed 5,000! I'm not sure if I should be happy with this milestone, at least time spent on spydies and fellow knifeknuts is time well spent. :D

Congrats on 5K Wouter! (and on your new Kat!)

Never handled one. Does the lock lend itself to one handed closing? (I know you're adding the complication of left handed use)

+1 and +1 :D

Nice milestone, hitting the 5,000 post mark.

And, as usual, your photos are excellent. So nice to photograph the Meerkat in snow like that. Great colours and 'textures'. Thank you!

Nice shots Wouter - that blue/grey should really blend well with blue jeans!

I'm hoping mine will show up before Christmas. I was wondering how well it would work out as a lefty (being a member of the sinister sixth). The blue/gray looks very nice.

congrats on 5K.
As a lefty, i just hold the knife with my fingertips, and use my pinky&ring finger to push down the left scale. When the knife is held blade upwards, the blade just drops in.

Well, got mine today. Great knife for a right handed person, but not working out as well as I thought it would for a lefty....opening is a hassle.

Oh well....I'll guess I'll stick with my G-10 Dragonfly.

The key to easy closing can be found on the paper insert in the box. "Scissor" the scales (push them in opposite directions) with your thumb on one side and your fingers on the other. Much better than just pushing the one scale with a finger or thumb. It works equally well for me right or left handed.

I'm an admirer of Spyderco's designs. Using them is like immersing yourself in music or studying a painting in a museum. I buy some "fine" art but my preference is for usable art.

Wait, the scales are just regular FRN? For some reason, the texturing on it made me assume the scales were grippy rubber. This changes things!

The snow also brought some flu for me, but it seems gone now. The blue really blends nicely with jeans. If the clip got the same treatment as the clips on UKPK knives, you'd have one perfectly urban camo pocket knife.

Closing right-handed is no problem for me, the knife comes with instructions. Opening left-handed is also no problem for me. Closing left-handed is coming along, I'll see if I can make a short videoclip.

The texture on the FRN scales does indeed look like rubber, and personally I think if feels a little like it as well. Mind you, it's not at all 'soft' or 'sticky' like rubber can be, it's all FRN, so I glides in and out of your pocket with the same ease. The texture still feels different and almost a bit 'rubbery'. I like it.

Just got my Meerkat(s). The lock is very cool. Better than advertised. I like how I can - with ONE grip flip the blade open and closed - NOT flick, but gently flip open and closed. I bought another for my son since I knew he would find it cool. It will be his small Spydie Xmas gift to pair with his Sage from last year. Great lock design!.

For those who don't have a Meerkat yet and are wondering how the lock works, I made this little clip.

Thanks Wouter! That was a great video that shows the function perfectly. Nice explanation as well. I didn't realize it was a lockback under the covers.

Great clip and it looks like a great back up blade, one i would carry cliped on my left pocket as wel, now a victorinox rides in my L pocket because i don't have a great small blade with a reversible clip :p

Waiting for new year and maybe it will be mine :D

Thanks Blonde for the pics and the video. Have not been around a Meerkat, so the lock is fascinating. I like the blade shape. Now how long is the blade?
