Aussie Spyder nuts, re. HI Warrior ?
Aussie Spyder nuts, re. HI Warrior ?
Hi guys, has any Australian Spyderco owners tried to get the new spyder H1 Warrior fixed blade into the country?
It's a freaking monster & I want one, I don't want to donate it to Aussie Customs though.
Cheers,
Pete

What about a 3 1/2" folder?
Am shipping one today from USPS.
Does customs open each package?
(Its single edge, normal config)
The buyer asked I tighten the pivot.
I thought it was a joke?
Guess I will tighten it up...... Its an M4 Rift

MCM definitely tighten up that Pivot screw, from what I've heard about Aussie customs they are quick to use any excuse to confiscate knives, they would more than likely to deem it a "gravity knife" otherwise.
I always request the seller to do the same that thing is done with my pivot screws. I'm in New Zealand and unlike Aussie customs they're actually pretty sensible here, but you never can be too sure these days.
It also pays to have a "freindly" shipping description. Something like "collectable folding knife" rather than anything too technically descriptive.

Should be ok, although customs are getting tougher with anything that opens with a stud. I just received a tasman salt, pacific salt (nearly 4" folder) and teacious from the US, cutoms had opened them and I reveived them all, took 3 1/2 weeks via usps first class.MCM wrote:What about a 3 1/2" folder?

Our customs (pointed out on our customs website) can class almost any knife as double edge - it doesn't have to be sharp or sharpened, it is if it can be sharpened, pretty open ended from their pov.
My bro just bought a tattoo d/fly and a persistence I think from spyderco directly and none were open our end by customs, it's just pot luck.
I think that pot luck goes a long way to describing what gets opened or not, but all packages are x-rayed & suss ones opened. Some of my knives had not been opened, but I do rekon they would spot a Warrior.
What a pity that we all proved ourselves to be too irresponsible to handle gear like that because I too would like to own one.
For that matter an AK would be nice too, but I suppose I just should be gratefull for being allowed to own a Spyderhawk even if it's not to be carried.
Thank's be to Sal that the Ladybug is so good & can be carried, but not within 50 metres of the pub.

I have had some knives opened and some not. I have eventually got everything I have ordered though. I remember when I had a Laguiolle knife shipped they actually called me and asked for an explanation (can't remember, but it may have been the shipping company wanting an explanation for customs).
As far as the H1 Warrior is concerned, it may very well get inspected and it may very well get questioned, but it is not a prohibited weapon. The NSW Police website lists all weapons which are prohibited in NSW as defined by the Weapons Prohobition Act 1998 and the Regulation 2009 (I don't know about other states). No where in the act, or its regulations, does it state that a double edged knife is a prohibited weapon. The customs website states 'sharp pointed, double edged, concealable blades'. Aside from the fact that the Warrior is not really concealable, customs has no authority to create additional legal regulations.
Might not be worth the hassle of having to argue the point though.

I won't be getting one - even though I can apply for one as I am a holder of a Prohibited Weapons License (took me 2 years to finally organise for one so I could get balis and other stuff :P).
The Warrior will be seized due to it's double edge. The Act says that even if it is 'capable' of being sharpened then they deem it to be illegal - go figure !
I usually will ask my knife dealer and anyone else sending me knives I buy to please tighten up the pivot just a bit so that it is hard to flick open. Knives with a pivot screw should always be tightened a bit so that the 'flick knife'/ gravity knife laws here do not come to play. I have had a Spyker which I paid some USD$200+ for come into question and deemed a flick knife. Took me months to sort it out with Customs and finally after all that time they had consultations with another Customs office and they too clai it to be a 'flick knife' WTF ! At the time Spyderco did not make any autos etc... but their flick knife term is what they call a gravity knife and thus I had to either face court and go to jail or let them send the Spyker to the Govt crushing machine
I have had Shabarias and Rock Salts come through unmolested by Customs, yet I have had Kopas and Ladbugs opened up fondled and molested and held in Customs holding pens for weeks on end !
Personally I wouldn't bother with the Warrior only for fear of losing it to the crusher and having to answer to their legal department for a 'please explain' or worse - have Customs officers or Police come knocking on your door.
Just my 2c worth, after having imported and exported hundreds of Spydercos and other brands (don't sweat it... only a handful :p ) I have experienced a variety of responses from Customs for a variety of knives and for a variety of reasons.
If you think you would like to still bring it in thn please contact your local branch of Australian Customs and they will ask for info, links to websites, documentation, and the most important thing would be 'why do you want it' ? My reason on my Prohibited Items license is that I am a listed collector. If you send them info and they deem it NOT to be illegal then you are sweet :D

I think you could definitely argue the point. But, is it really worth it? As Daniel said, give them a call and be nice, you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.
Just reading the regulations is pretty disturbing though, its amazing what is in there though, some seemingly pretty innocuous stuff.
Oh well, lets just hope I can get my SuperHawk before Christmas (it shipped this morning!).

I HAVE had problems with Aussie Customs and as a result I get 95%+ of my shipments opened and molested, some even "ruined"........!!!!
Why ruined? Well it seems it's OK to open your nicely packed Spydie (or any other brand knife) any old how whether you rip or damage the box or not........the fact that this is both contemptuous bordering on malicious, and pig ignorant doesn't seem to enter into things, I'm just a dumb knife collector who must be doing something dodgy...........its really "hard" to work out that pushing from one end opens the box quite easily.
I've had knives randomly seized for being "push daggers", mostly knives that follow the design path of Fred Perrin and his La Griffe designs. I do NOT have a problem with Fred Perrin originals but have a problem with licenced variants made by other people such as Emerson despite the fact the very same designs from the very same companies are sold through knife shops here in Oz.
I also lost a custom made David L. Mosier Knife for the same reason altho with hindsight I should have checked first (you live and learn) as that one WAS walking a fine line between legal, i.e. non-licenced, and not.
IF you want to bring a Warrior in then you HAVE to check first! IF they say no, then thats the end of it, pure and simple.
We have wide-open interpretation of what should be allowed entirely up to the personal discretion of the Customs officer, that's just the way it is.
Regards,
BRIAN
