Millie madness

Post by stonetone »

Hi everyone!

It's been a while since I splurged on a Spydie, but my new Orange Millie just arrived this morning, and I'm already glad I did.

Still getting used to it, it's hard to appreciate how big it is until you're holding it, right? It seems to have an incredible strength to weight ratio. It's tight as a drum, and sharp, sharp, sharp. It's already apparent that newspaper ink and orange G10 are natural enemies, but this one might be a little much for the office anyway.

One somewhat frivolous question: Are the clips interchangeable between a Millie and a Para? The same dimensions? I'm kind of thinking the black clip from my D2 Para might be more at home on the Orange Millie. (Apologies if this has come up before, I only had the patience to go through a dozen or so pages of search results...)

Congratulations on your new Millie! I'm a few weeks into my first one (LH). Strange but true: as they say, the Millie only seems big at first. It's not so much that my other knives seem small now, it's just that they seem to run out of blade.

Yes, clips are the same. I swapped the black clips off my D2 Millie and Para for chrome ones...then bought a couple of low-ride Ti clips from STR. All the same...

They are swappable - I put a black Para clip on my orange Millie - and the silver Millie one on the Para - both looked ace!!

(... but I don't use clips so I took them off again :D :D)

Well, after I noticed the black spacer between the Millie's scales, it seemed like a natural.

But now that I've made the switch, I think the Para actually looks the better of the two. The chrome seems to give the foliage green a no-nonsense, utilitarian vibe. The Millie now reminds me of a Halloween decoration, but that's also very cool.

I had a bit of difficulty removing the clips from their original spots. One of the screws on the Millie seemed to lose its purchase as I was unscrewing it, which made me despair briefly that I was stripping the G10 on a brand new knife. I had to apply some leverage to the clip while turning the driver to free it. I kept the screws native to each knife when switching the clips, though, and they all bit naturally and seated nice and tight.

Near-panic moment though, I don't mind telling you...

The Military, big? Naw, it's about right, but not "big".
Go hold a CS Voyager X2. Those things are big (and carry surprisingly well at only 6.65oz).

If you like the black clip on both knives, you can order one from the sfo for like 8 or 9 bucks shipped that way you can have a black clip on both (if you liked both better witha black clips that is) or just to have a spare black one! Or dont do anything at all if you like them how they are now! :D

The orange military is sweeeet! I love mine! I too have toyed with the idea of changing out the clip for one of my black para clips.... Perhaps I might...
Congrats on your Millie :D

I'll plug STR's low-ride titanium clips again here. Very nice work. I'll try to post a pic later so you all can see them.

If I don't get an all Ti Military next yea, then I'm for sure getting an orange one. I was waiting and waiting for Spyderco to make a locking knife with the orange G-10 handles and finally they did, very cool knife. I'd love to see an orange Para now too.

I really don't like liner locks very much, but Spyderco has this lock down perfect on the Millies.I have a orange Millie and a Bg42 Millie.I carry my Bg42 almost every day.Once you start using a Millie you probably will think anything smaller is useless....at least that is how it has been for me :D .I really love it when someone asks me "why do you need such a big knife"....I tell ahh it really ain't big enough! :D

Any Millie looks great with a stripped clip, especially if you remove the black backspacer. I did this to one of my D2 Millies, and it's gorgeous! Quite right on that remark about Foliage Green and stainless.

Yeah, I mean, mine might be aluminum, if the aluminum can be black. 'Cuz it's definitely black. It looks pretty cool with a black clip.

In other news, I've come to the realization that the Millie fits my hand way better than the Para. And all those who say that the rest of my knives will seem too small after handling one, well, they might be onto something.

Mine is black anodized aluminum on my orange Millie, and plastic with metal inserts on my Bg-42.I suspect your backspacer is aluminum also if it is the orange model. If you look closely you can see the milling marks, and it will be cool to the touch on a cold day.It wouldn't be really cost effective for spyderco to have the backspacers machined from plastic when the molding process would be lots cheaper. :)

IIRC, if you own a orange Military, you have a black aluminium clip ;)
