So, by that logic, would an FRN version of the Caly 3 be a Caly 4 (and by extension, will the FRN version of the Stretch be a Stretch III).

Yep, don't think it's been mentioned yet, but another early "spin off" from the C52/C54 was the Kopa. It came out shortly after the UKPK, but may have been under development longer, so hard to say which "idea" came first.
Thanx for the call. Actually, what we've tried to use as a standard is a change in the pattern of a knife. This change in pattern usually requires new tooling.
In the case of the Stretch2, the change was made to the pattern when we made the CF version.
The question we always face is "how much change is enough change to make it an upgrade". There is always that gray area. Brian Huegel always give us a hard time when we are not logical in our numbers. 'Tis a challenge.
I don't think sales plans to call the FRN stretch a "new" model, just a variation. The tooling was for the FRN handle, as a material, not as a pattern change. Sorrhy for the confusion.

Indeed, my thoughts exactly - though maybe make the blade a fraction less broad than it currently is - I do like the tiny differences between the Caly3 and UKPK blades - the Caly feels just a little stronger, a little more elegant, refined and puposeful
.... but screws would be fine by me :)
Any more news yet - I could understand if this was being held off for an improvement in the financial climate
I think what I might like to see in either a 'variation' or a new version in the Caly 3 is:
Full screw construction (I can take or leave this one)
Deeper choil (Many afi's here have claimed that they like the UKPK choil over the Caly 3)
Larger blade (Once again a few have been calling for this)
FRN handle (will this make it cheaper or more durable ?)
Flat clip (I prefer the wireclip - but others here prefer the usual Spyderco flat one)
Caly 3 or Caly 4 ? Whatever it is I wait in anticipation.... nay, I QUIVER in anticipation :D

I am sorry to disappoint you, but Sal on several occasions mentioned that there is not enough room for screws. Which never was an issue for me.
I am afraid that poor economy and weak dollar kill this great knife, along with many others made in Japan. I still hope that one day it would come back as a sprint run or Caly4, may be it will be even Golden made.
The only possible improvement I can see would be a larger choil like on UKPK.
"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf"
Do you know I had a dim recollection that maybe someone had said that screw construction wasn't a goer for this model - it is a tragedy - well, you know, in the scheme of things like :)

IIRC per Sal, Sage is a breed between Caly3 and Native, but......
I love my Caly3 and I carried every day since I got it. I liked Native and I love my FFG Native4, it takes it's turns with Caly3 now. I never used Sage, never cared much about it, except that IMHO it has best looking CF. Go figure.

In my opinion the Sage is so much better than the Caly, both in terms of size and in overall quality. All my CF Calys have that annoying blade rubbing on the liner thing, plus the tang is too narrow, the ramp is too high and the handle is too small. But the ZDP edge is the closest you can get to a razor in a pocket knife...
Can you confirm something about the Caly line? Calypso, Jr., Calypso, C52 FRN Calypso, Caly 3 113. ?? is this the G-10 version, or was their a version between the FRN and the CF Caly 3?
I'm hoping for orange g10, blade to be slightly under 3",screws, deeper choil and maybe a new locking mechanism. But if backlock was all they had I still might get one.
I just love the way Sal keeps dancing around the answer to the question "What will happen to the Caly line next, after the Caly3 will be gone?" :D
We will have to be patient one more month until the new catalog comes out. Well, maybe even longer, in case a possible successor comes later next year.... which I'm afraid will happen, since the Caly3 is still available and no Caly4 is on the horizon (just one more month left this year, so the 2010 catalog is finished and in print by now for sure).

Dennis, in case you missed it, Kristi posted in a thread somewhere that the CF/ZDP version is definitely still in the 2010 lineup.
We also have to consider another 3.5" leaf shape blade in Superhawk handled knife. The question I have is will this be closer to the original Manix or something else.
Personally I would love to see a 3.5" Caly following more of the original Calypso design. G10 would be nice but to save cost fish scale FRN would nice.
