Grail is BS
I don't think there is one perfect knife for every situation. But there are perfect knives for every situation. Or there are perfect designs of a type of knife. For me the SE Cricket is the perfect watch pocket knife, the Calypso is the perfect Dress knife, the Police 3 SE is the best heavy duty knife. The new Grail hunt for me is a VG-10 Spyderhawk is the best Hawkbill.
The hunt is great though.

I think we might have a consensus that there is no one knife that makes you just stop. I do own a Stretch and a Persian. I have yet to use them. The Persian is just too **** pretty and the stretch I just got a few weeks ago and haven't had a chance to put it in rotation.
I think I just enjoy buying Spydero's in general so much that I could never be limited to just one. I've just heard so much talk about the "Grail" I wanted to hear others take on it.
I do have to say though that the Caly III has probably (as of now) struck me as just about perfect but, I wouldn't hack on anything too rough with it so perhaps it's not all encompassing. Sometimes I wish Spyderco (shudder) would quit making knives so I could save some extra money. :D

How about a Kris. Hated it until I handled one.It is the one knife that really just made me go wow.Bought it while I was on vacation from a knife shop.Probably paid too much, but i don't regret the purchase.Truly a beautiful knife in person, and fits my hand perfect.

Personally I think the Spyderco "grail" is not a physical knife per se, but something along the lines of Kaizen (continuous improvement) mixed with Moksha. It is the pursuit of the blade, not its obtainment. After we obtain a knife, is that all? Does the grail cease to exist once we lay hands upon it? Or does the grail emerge when we fully appreciate the cutting experience, welcoming the amalgam of Sal's dreams, our hopes, and the task at hand?
And, such a knife does not exist as something new from Spyderco will come over the horizon. Plus, there are always the "oldies but goodies" :spyder: s that we've missed when they were current production models that we're searching for as well, and feel most fortunate to find once in a great while. Old and new, it all adds to the excitement that is Spyderco. As long as there's a desire, the search goes on.
The term Grail is loosly translated to:
"The knife thats in the mail"
300 quality folders........... and geting closer........ :D
From Spyderco? for me its my polished tip up CF S90v Military, S90v Manix 2 for EDC. Could live with those two alone.
Have many grails from many makers.
But lately the knifes I carry are becoming more important than the Grails.
Food for thought........

Yeah, my first one-handed folder was my grail.
Until I started buying Spyderco's and now there is no grail. Just as there is no perfect car - sports car for fun, SUV for hauling people, pickup for hauling work stuff, luxury car for nice quiet driving. My spydercos fill different niche needs. LBKs for office carry, UKPK/Caly for medium duty, Endura for heavier duty, remote release for my fishing vest, spin for money clip, blah, blah, blah...now if I see something I like, I buy and then figure out what niche hasnt been filled...Spyderco is my grail knife company...

i dont think grails exist. i guess you could call some knives grail knives. but in the sense of you are chasing after it and have wanted one for years. IE the dodo. a lot of people are chasing after it. but when they finally get it, they probably won't stop buying knives.
it may be like a milestone but they won't stop buying knives. if it was a grail they'd just buy the dodo and be done. they wouldnt buy any other knives before they found that knife.

I think Grail would be a good name for a knife (whatever it is) this way everyone could own the Grail and stop all this nonsense about looking for one. There is no one perfect knife, like there is no one perfect anything....you get a knife that really connects for you and within a week you'll be saying I wish the handle was a tad longer....I wish the blade was a bit shorter, if only it was lighter, sharper, more attractive, the choil could be larger, the jimpings not aggressive enough, the action could be smoother, I wish it had this or that steel, what!, no lanyard hole!!!....If only the lock was different, don't these people know how to make a sheath?....Strike a cord all you grail seekers...LOL....My advice find something that cuts and just be happy.....Doc :D

I recently got my Pacific Salt in the mail and I can honestly say I don't think I could be possibly happier with any other knife (that fits my lifestyle) than this. It looks like I will now be carrying the Spyderhawk and the Pacific on fishing trips, but it's going to be a really tough choice for diving.
The C-44 is my Spyder "Grail"
To me Spyderco has one "grail" knife which meets 85% of my cutting needs. And thank the GOOD Lord above I have one to EDC. It's the C-44 big Dyad. I carried mine for almost 4 years off and on and now I've kind of semi-retired it for the time being.
With one full sized, sheepsfoot, serrated blade and one clip point plain edged blade that knife just really meets my cutting needs. At this time I don't have a back up unit in case I was to lose it so I'm very careful with it.
I had heard talk of a possible H-1 Dyad about a year ago. I truly hope that knife comes to fruition. The concept of a double bladed, multi purpose, full sized folder is simply the "cat's meow" to me. If I were to pick one folder for a survival situation it would be the big Dyad as my primary blade.
I'm just blown away that the big Dyad didn't become one of Spyderco's very best all time big sellers. The big Dyad will probably be my Grail Spyder for some time to come. What a masterful piece of engineering Spyderco accomplished with that blade. It must come back.
