MuleProjects News... Halpern Titanium will be making Mule Scales...

#1

Post by Marion David Poff »

Good Day,

In a recent meeting with Spyderco in Golden Colorado, Halpern Titanium (halperntitanium.com) of Three Rivers Massachusetts decided to begin making handles scales for the Spyderco Mule Team knives. Halpern Titanium brings 12 years of expertise with high tech materials in a precision environment for the knife industry to the project. Halpern Titanium's business is knifemaking supplies and precision machining and cutting services for the knife industry. Their first product for the Mule Team knives will be 0.25 inch thick black G-10 scales. They have an idea that they may offer the same scales in other colors and possibly with different textures, depending on customer response.

And for the Do It Yourselfer, they will be selling the necessary hardware to mount your own scales. Drivers will be available separately.

And stay tuned, this week, I will be publishing my review of the Cuscadi Mule Scales...

Sounds good! Although when I read the thread title, it made me envision a titanium handled mule.

ETA is about 3 weeks, or so I have been informed.

I have some more news about handles scales coming, I will be posting my Cuscadi scale article here this week, and those are pretty cool.

lol I dunno about lazy, but considering that one set of scales and a sheath would set me back far less in time and money than purchasing all of the tools and gear to do it myself, I'm happy to support someone else's endeavors.
After college is done, dropping a few $$ on some learning materials, tools, and extra scales to mess up on (it'll happen :D ) is much less daunting than now.

Oh yeah, and if all turns out as they have planned, these handle scales will be pretty inexpensive.

You know, that could be done, and it would be interesting to see, wouldn't it?

Halpern Titanium makes titanium handle plates for 1911s.

Good point, economic efficiency, that tooling up to make your own scales has some cost if you don't already have a power-tool setup (drill scales for fasteners/lanyard, rough cut scales to size & finish scales to fit):

12" Ryobi drill press $169 +
16" Craftsman scroll saw $114 +
Craftsman router $80 & table $70 +
bits and blades estimated $67 = $500 (w/o material costs, scale material, fasteners & lanyard tubing)

Should be nice for variety too. Just ordered some cocobolo handle slabs last night, but I'd love to have another mule and 3-4 choices of slabs to change around. Having a handful of synthetic handle slabs with removeable hardware would just be hard to pass up.

I've got the tools and space to make my own, just don't have the time.

LOL!! :D
Well, some of us don't have convenient sources for the materials or have power tools. :p I want to make my own stuff, but would pay more for shipping materials from the states than on the materials themselves. Still looking for a source in Japan... and trying to convince my wife that it's okay to make sheaths and handles at home, as well as spend the money.

Just in....

More details about the Halpern Titanium Mule handle scales have become available.

According to a post at USN, http://www.usualsuspect.net/forums/show ... p?t=444602.

"The first batch of 20 sets should be ready in about 3 weeks. I'll keep a list of who gets first dibs! They will sell for $20.00/set and the first 20 sets will include free hardware."

And speaking of price, for those looking for hardware so that they can mount their own handle scales, Halpern Titanium will make 3 pivots and 6 torx screws available for $5.00.

:) I feel I should clarify. I was not being mean, just poking fun. I know not everyone has the want or need or ability to make thier own. Some just want it already finished (Temperance 2).

Again, no offence intended just horsing around. :D

Hey, no offense taken. :) I was just kinda whining about not being able to do it myself. 'Til I can, I'll buy some inexpensive alternatives. I am starting to try cord wrapping Mules...

btw, how does one get on the list for one of those sets of handle scales at Halpern Titanium? I'd like one. :D
