I'm up there with Tony. My Spyderco collection grew to 230 and I was thinking this is a little too much. I bought a sports car last year and decided to part with some of my collection to have goodies for the car. I have about 50 of them in two Spydiepaks that are in my EDC rotation (lots to choose from!). The rest are mostly duplicates and many safe queens. With a lot of EDC to choose from, I got to the point where I really want to start using the knives instead of them just sitting. My concern were that if I put a mark on the knife that it will be worth less so under my ownership they'd never be used. They'd sit better with a collector. My first start was to take an old school CoPilot (which I have several of) and relegate one as a user. After some use and a couple marks on the handle, it was no longer a safe queen. I usually use my EDC knives for pocket carry and cutting paper/boxes so they don't get that beat up and still could pass off as nearly new.

The other thing I had to deal was with collector number knives. I bought many from the same dealer with the same number. Now these I dare not make users. I did pay a small premium for these. The numbers I got are almost the same collector numbers with a few being different. I just made up my mind that I don't want collector number knives any longer as it's just a number on a blade. I'd rather have a clean one without a number. Should I want to put it in service, the collector number won't be a stopping point. If I was in the collector club and wanted my specific number, that would be a different story. At first having collector numbers was fun but as I turn more towards EDC the knives, the numbers mean less to me and they're the first ones to be sold off. I bought a pair of Carbon Fiber Kopas last week and specified that they be not a collector numbers. Well one was and I wound up buying just one. I'll find another as a spare as this Kopa will go in my EDC rotation.

I sold off about 30 safe queens (Gunting, StarMate, big Persian, etc.) and feel better that these are in collector hands as these are knives I bought as collectibles and not to carry. I've had them for years so its time to let them go. I may go through my collection another time and probably unload another 50 or so that I know I won't carry or use. I look at this as shifting away from one hobby and going to another. I'm not out of collecting Spydercos and do buy some new ones that I want in my EDC rotation.
