I would say either the Para Military if you have enough cash ( they can be had for around 70.00 second hand on the sell forums of the internet) or the Native.

Tenacious, Delica, Tenacious, or a Persistence now seems to be the most reccomended models. Now what exactly do the numbers and such mean on a knife? i think H1 is a kind of steel that people prefer, but what do the other things mean?

The steel is stamped on all spydercos. Check out the edge-u-cation portion of the spyderco site.

I have three knives. Millie in BG42, Pacific Salt in H1 (of course) and a Tenacious with the 8CR13MOV blade. Of all of them, I would recommend the Pac Salt. It is perfect for scouting activities, easy to clean, WILL NOT CORRODE, very strong back lock (mid lock whatever), fairly inexpensive, has switchable pocket clip for left or right carry (titanium none the less), fairly attractive, easy to sharpen, and holds a decent edge. All for around 80 bucks. Thats a good knife right there, lots of value. Plus, if you get the yellow one, its easy to see laying around and what-not. You wont be dissapointed with this one. I dissagree with having a Millie for scouts. Not that its not the right tool, its capable of scouts duty and much much more, but it requires more maintenance (keeping the rust at bay mostly and also keeping dirt and gunk out between the little bits inside the knifes body). The pac salt is always at the ready and really just needs to be rinsed every so often and touched up in the way of sharpening.
The tenacious is also a great Spyderco to have, but I would choose the pac salt aboveit when considering bieng in the woods. My tenacious to ME is more like a knife i cycle in to give my Millie some time to sleep! LOL. But if its rugged out doors-y type stuff, i pack the Salt.
My two cents.

PS
Incase you werent aware, the Pacific Salt is an ENDURA with H1 steel blade, non rusting components including a Titanium Clip.

Cheers Man.

As you are on a budget and the size knife you want is mid-sized you really have many choices in the Spyderco range. I would wager that ALL of the Spydies would make excellent users.

However, from a personal point of view and reading your requirements I would say to try these:

Delica 4 in FFG (but that has a PE blade)
Delica 4 SE or CE
Endura 4 CE
Native III
Any of the Salt range (for ease of maintenance)
Tenacious

If you go to the usual knife forums and trawl the for sale boards you'll find some nice bargains on those knives and possibly higher quality ones at reasonable enough prices.

In my pocket currently I have a Delica 4 with Blue FRN handles and ZDP189 steel. It is in rotation with a few more of my mid-sized beauties like the Caly 3 G10, Mini Persian, and Lum Chinese. Larger knives I carry are the Large Persian & Military. Smaller knives include the Ladybug and Kopa.

Good luck with your hunting and final choice. Let us know how you go once you have got over the confusion from info overload here :p

Hello Scout,

This Eagle Scout highly recommends serrations for ease in cutting rope and twine, which is something I'm sure you do a lot of. If you can afford it, the Para-military SE (SpyderEdge) is unstoppable; the D2 (type of steel) PE (plain-edge) version is a favorite EDC of mine and I have an SE one the way. For a limited budget, I'd recommend be the Endura 4 CE (ComboEdge) with the Emerson opener. My medium-sized hands can use this knife with complete control, and I think the Emerson opener version has a more natural blade tip than the other versions. Lastly, although I don't have a Stretch, the CE version is on my short list of potential new knives. Be sure to check the maximum edge length you're allowed in both your state and camp. The Para is less than 3" while the Endura and Stretch are greater than 3".

YIS,
Ira

Why are we still recommending $100-plus knives?

He's a young man with limited funds. A standard FRN Delica or Endura will suit him just fine. Perhaps even a FRN Stretch.

For the uses of a Boy Scout, I'd second the notion that serrations will be handy. For any of the above, look for the combo-edge models.

Also, you may take a look at the Byrd line. Some real good value there, too.

Actually, I have a brand new in box Byrd Meadowlark. It's a plain edge blade, but if you'd like to check it out, send me your contact info and it's yours.

I second the idea of the combo edge Endura wave. It is, without a doubt, the thing you're looking for.

Firebat, you have a very valid point. The 'afi' in me got carried away with the Para SE recommendation. However, I do have a more appropriate recommendation now...

This morning I used a Tenacious SE to cut down about two dozen empty cardboard boxes for recycling. (They used to contain parts for a monster swing set.) I wore loose leather gloves and this knife did not slip once. It shred through everything without a hiccup and was still sharp as ever. The open design allowed the lock to be easily cleaned by simply blowing the gunk out of it.

The Tenacious may not be the smoothest and quickest opening knife, which isn't necessarily a bad thing for a Scout knife, but it is a rugged workhorse that can be used for just about any cutting need in Scouting. Given that the useful serrated/spyderedge version can be had now for about $35, I think the Tenacious SE is the ideal knife for this young Scout.

Regards,
Ira

Get the :spyder: Manix 2 :spyder: , it is the size you're looking for and is about $100. This knife is made in Golden, Colorado is beefy as all **** and will last you a long time. Or maybe a :spyder: Salt 1 :spyder: , maybe.

Once you make the transition to Spyderco, you'll most likely do with your gerber as I did with mine.
Shiny footprints.

I paid $75 + shipping when they first came out. Most dealers got down in the mid $65 range. It's one helluva knife!

If you can afford it, go for the Endura, you won't be sorry.
If money's tight consider a knife from Spyderco's budget series, the Byrd line.
I both have the Endura and the Byrd Cara-Cara, which is very much like the Endura, but cheaper. The Endura's steel is superior but the Cara-Cara's is very decent, I believe it's the same steel as the Tenacious.
I use the Cara-Cara as a beater, and it stands up to it.

clovisc wrote:i'd go for a pacific salt. they never rust or corrode, and get tougher the more you use and sharpen them. just about the best workhorse knife ever made.

the endura 4 is also a great choice.

+1 on the Pacific Salt. Cheap, and H1.

Now that i have all of these recommendations, sometime this month, i will make a decision, and get it ordered, but i need to know, WHERE to buy? there are many places i can think of, but i need all details, and amazon just doesn't cut it (punny). I need a site that has good prices, lets me know all of the specs, including steel type, measurements, weight, and etc.

Mate,

Try
http://www.bladeforums.com - in the Exchange section
http://www.knife-bst.com
http://www.ebay.com

You'll quickly see what is available and what is a decent enough price. As you are after a user knife a good previously loved one which can be found at any of those 3 sites would suit you fine as long as the lock on them is still solid !

Well, you've found http://spyderco.com/forums, so you will be able to find http://spyderco.com/catalog/list.php?genre=knife . There are (almost) all the knives Spyderco produces listed, including pics, specifications, and a short description.
After you've found "your" knife (and I still think that the CE Endura or CE Stretch FRN will suit your needs best), you can choose between a LOAD of online dealers. New Graham Knives is one of them, but there are much more. Still, the cheapest way is to buy one used (New In Box), and ozspyder did already provide a list for that. Happy choosing and hunting!
