My primary concern was that knives with finger holes are sometimes classified as "brassknucles"- I had read this in reference to the old Spyderco Karambit. Since the goal was a legal Swick substitute, that seemed like to much of a liability.

I had several other concerns about including a Swick indexing hole:
1. Unlike a fixed blade, which has an exposed handle and blade ready for the grasp, a folder has to be manipulated to open. I was worried that having to stuff your finger into a hole would slow down this process.
2. Bulk- Including a hole large enough for a finger inside the handle would require a much wider, pocket hogging handle.
3. Lock failure- while the Comp lock is one of the strongest out there, if it were to fail the Swick indexing hole would be transformed into a giant cigar cutter!

Overall, I just didn't see that working out as well as the deep choil. Of course, if someone can render a badass, hole in the handle version, I'd be interested. :D

make the hole the blade pivot and use a CBL lock ala pikal it would work. I like a multipurpose knife and for me this would solidify multipurpose. a certain other company has a design where the fingerhole is also the pivot and they just brought it back out. Unfortunately not as good as the original and now made out of country. I think spyderco could do it better and the CBL would be ALOT safer

yeah something like that then you keep the finger hole and it appeals to the average joe too for something grippy. and the CBL would be perfect for MBC and just plain hard usage and then maybe they could do a leaf blade and a hawkbill blade too just thoughts

i didn't wanna name drop but the knife i was talking about was the original gerber chameleon. They redesigned it this year after years of being discontinued and they call it something else and made it thinner take a look at that knife it has a similar lock to a CBL but it's not a CBL it's something else

Funny you mentioned that, it was my first knife. Pivot is horrible, so tough to turn it's impossible to open with one hand. The handle was quite comfortable thou, with index finger through the hole there is no way to lose grip.

Going to need a fair bit more material than that if you're going down that path.

Regarding putting the index finger hole in the blade, I tried doing a design that did that a couple of years back. Ended up useable, but it was pretty **** ugly, and there were a fair few compromises to it.

Still have the pics somewhere around here if anyone's interested for some reason.

Yes, I plan on doing a redesign later to see if I can make it more durable, then I'm going to do some cardboard mockups to see how it feels in my hand. Still, I feel that the original design will always be stronger.

I'd be interested in seeing your design as well. More minds on this one, the better.

It would fly with (2) 3/16" wide bronze bushings the size of 50 cent pieces.
Should be very strong too if well supported.

Looks very funny, but the perspex proto wasn't actually that bad in hand.

Main method of opening was to carry it tip down, then do something like a spyderdrop, but putting your index finger through the hole instead of pinching it between thumb and index finger. Opening was fairly fast.
