Native question

Regrettably, this year I have lost two EDC knives, my Native III and Delica. Burns my hide. :mad:

With a birthday in a couple of weeks, I am going to ask my wife for a replacement and am strongly considering this:

Native Carbon Fiber PE SC41CFP


This has a bit different swell to the blade itself from my previous Native. I like it and think this would make a great EDC. Can anyone tell me which model this is (I, II, II, IV)? Any experiences with this model?

Also, do you know what type of clip it comes with, wire or solid?

My other choice is this Delica with G-10 handle.



I like the G-10 handles. Have an Emerson with them and it is a great knife.

So, I plan on asking for one of these two knives soon. Any opinions on either will be appreciated!

NoBite - it's a Native 4 which comes with a solid clip that attaches with 3 screws and can be attached in 4 ways - left-hand, right-hand, tip-up or tip-down. It's a great design and a slim knife which carries very unobtrusively. It's one of my favorites!

It's called the Native IV. Eventually, there will be a US made, FRN handled version with nested liner construction similar to the FRN Delica IV and Stretch II.

Honestly, I'm not really crazy about the CF Native IV. The lack of jimping in the spine and smooth matte CF are anachronistic, when compared to other recent releases.

Hi Nobite - the Native IV looks a very nice knife but it is one I haven't had too much trouble steering away from. I am a huge Native fan but somehow this one I could resist :p

The Delica $ G10 is a very nice solid midsized knife. I would recommend this very highly indeed.

Every time I look at the Native4 CF, I keep thinking it's overpriced for what it gives you. I think Sage CF is an awesome deal and gives you everything the Native4 CF would get you. Don't get me wrong, I have 4 Natives and I love them in fact, I'm carrying one right now, but I just don't think the CF version gives you the best bang for the buck.

For the record, if MY wife gave me a Native CF, I would make sure she gets something NICE for her B-day too. :)

I agree. If they'd used either the Stretch II/Superhawk or the Sage/Terzuola style CF on it, it would have been a great knife. If they'd done that and jimped the spine, it would have been even better. And, if they done both those things, plus leaving off the bevel on the spine, it would be one fantastic knife.

I received my first Native4 as a gift from friends in December and i love it that much that I bought second to EDC. I am enjoying this knife a lot, I love it. Ergos, fit and finish, look are great
For some reasons I never felt this way. I paid about $130 for my Native and saw them go for much less. Sage is very nice made knife, but IMHO fit and finish on Native is much better, also I like overall design on Native more.
Of cause CF on Superhawk and Sage is grippier than on Native, but Native4 is giving me enough grip for my needs/uses. But I would appreciate if Native4 would have jimpings and wire clip like Caly3.

Does anybody know if this is a regular production model or if it's a sprint run? I'm assuming a regular production model but this isn't a knife you hear much about on the forums.

It is regular production (probably limited). There were talks when it is came out. If you search, you will find threads here and on BF.

Hey there NoBite...How'd you lose your Spydies?

Way back last winter we had a bad ice storm, the worst natural disaster on record in our area. Our part of the county was out of power 17-22 days. A neighbor rigged up a generator to power his well pump and invited me to come over for a warm shower. I remember having my SS Delica with me when I went over there. Later back at home I could not find it. I sure wasn't thinking all that clearly and could have set it down somewhere, but it never turned up.

Last weekend I was carrying my Native. I took my dog to the kennel club to participate in a dog fair. I carried a heavy steel dog crate back to my car at the end of the event. I could have rubbed the Native out of my pocket while carrying that crate next to myside. Had it with me, but it wasn't there later at home when I went to grab it. It's no fun seeing your short-term memory disappear.

Thanks to all for your replies. I really mean that. I like the looks of this blade. I like the solid clip over the wire clip. I am not particularly attached to the CF handle. If you folks think this knife will one day be available with other handle options, I can wait.

So, now I turn my attention to the Delica.

NoBite I would go for the Native it were me because it fits my hand well.My point is you should get the one that fits you best.My Native 2 served me well for ten years, and never slipped out of my hands due to the "slippery" stainless scales.

I really like my Native IV. I also like the smooth CF. It has a pleasing texture IMO. I don't find it slippery.

We were loading up the horses for a trip to Shawnee Forest for a trail ride this morning. My wife caught my attention and flipped something in my direction - my trusty Native! It had fallen into the tack room of the trailer, apparently when I put the dog crate back in there when I had returned from the dog fair last weekend.

So, I no longer need to ask for a Native for my birthday. But, that does open up new possibilities. I had not looked at the Sage before reading about it in this thread. Looks nice.

I want to ask about an inexpensive Spydie that could be a great little secret - the Persistence. Has anyone got one of these? I could buy a couple to have around and be money ahead.

I have both the Persistence and Tenacious. I was quite impressed by the Tenacious, it's an excellent value for its price and is about as left hand friendly as a right handed liner lock, is going to get. I can't say the same for the Persistence. Not as left hand friendly, and even right handed people can need to open a knife left handed at times. Doesn't fit my hand as well either. Plus, to me at least, it does not seem as well made.

Thanks Deacon! In retrospect, I am leaning toward the Sage or maybe the G-10 Delica. I ran into the Persistence and it seemed to be a decent-looking knife.
