Engraving Blades

#1

Post by gldfshkpr »

Hi Everybody,

Am wondering, it'd be nice to have my initials and date of knife on the blades of my knives. How does one go about it? Does it need to be laser etched? Can I take them to my local trophy shop and have them do the engraving? Is the steel too hard for that?

Not too hard for a diamond tip dragging device. That is how they were engraved before Lasers. I think Spyderco can do this for a fee if you ship it to the SFO.
...oh you know why!

I didn't know Spyderco does this. That would be very cool. Just my last name and a date is what I'd need on there. I figure my knives are probably going to out live me. Might as well have some history to it when they're passed down.

At one time they did through the SFO. Not sure if that is the case anymore. It doesn't hurt to ask them.

you can probably find a local place that does it on jewelry, should be able to do it on knife too.

See if your local trophy shop can do laser etching.

Spyderco does it, but the setup charge is quite high. For initials, you'd probably be better off with something local, a trophy shop or one of those "memento" places most larger malls have.

Absolutely. Is is much less expensive to have the engraving done by an aftermarket shop. I bought a bunch of Navigator IIs as gifts for the groomsmen at my wedding and had a local jeweler put the guys names on the steel handles scales. This did a really nice job and the cost was minimal.

I had a local trophy shop engrave a Ladybug blade for a gift. She said she never had such a hard material to engrave, but did it for free- the engraving was pretty shallow.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)
