Closeout Tenacious at Sierra Trading Post?

#1

Post by iwolf81 »

STP is tempting me again with another 30% off coupon, and I'm looking at the Tenacious for $25. I'm wondering, however, how the Tenacious model has changed such it rates a closeout status. Might the latest version have highly desirable features(s)?

Thanks,
Ira

The knife itself doesn't appear to be on "closeout", unless it's mere presence on Sierra's site gives it that status. Without the 30% coupon, which is not linked to a specific item, the price is about the same as at any other dealer. I'd be somewhat surprised if Spyderco was dropping the SE Tenacious, if any of them was a slow mover and candidate for retirement, I'd have guessed the CE. So, if you want a serrated Tenacious, I'd say go for it.

STP does describe the Tenacious SE as a closeout. The Caly3 SE, now gone from STP, was also a closeout Price-wise, the Tenacious SE is $35 at knifecenter.com and knifeworks.com, and $30 at cutleryshoppe.com. (I've made prior purchases from these great places.) Now, $5-10 is not much of a difference, and I really don't need the Tenacious SE, but I'm still infected with the Spydie bug and it's difficult to leave a great $25 Spyderco on the table, so to speak. :-)

As for the early retirement of these knives, I'm wondering if the SE knives are being seen as less politically correct by the general consumer (not us Spydie addicts ;-) and have become slow movers that require pruning by Spyderco?

Ira

I understand what you're saying, and yes, you are correct that the SE Tenacious does show as a closeout there. However, everything shows as a closeout there and, unless you apply the extra 30% coupon you mention (which is not automatic), the price is $34.95, which is about what everyone has been charging for them all along. But yes, at $25 it's definitely a bargain. You could be correct about the SE being less appealing to the average buyer, either for PC concerns or just because they can't see sharpening it with the sharpener on their electric can opener. :D

Minimum shipping on STP is around $8, so with shipping you can beat that deal on ebay. I either buy in quantity to dilute the shipping cost or wait for a discount plus free shipping deal.

Here's the Sierra shipping rates:
$0.00 - $25.00.............$5.95
$25.01 - $50.00............$7.95
$50.01 - $75.00............$9.95
$75.01 - $100.00.........$10.95
$100.01 - $150.00........$12.95
$150.01 - $200.00........$14.95
OVER $200..................$16.95

As you can see, the shipping on the $24.47 SE Tenacious would have been $6 instead of the $8 I guessed before.

Most of the Spyderco's just had their prices cut so that, even though the dealflyer discount dropped to 25%, the net price on the Tenacious dropped to $22.28. With the prices cut, I'm guessing through Labor Day, now is the time to pull the trigger if a free shipping plus xx% off dealflyer discount rolls up. (free shipping usually requires a $100 purchase)

If you look around, you might find the better deal which is +20% off AND free shipping. This is a better deal than the 30%off due to aforementioned shipping prices. I keep looking at that Poliwog SS. Something is telling me to get that classic original design to fill the ball lock void in my small lineup.

With all the discounts, the Tenacious is down to $22.28 and the Poliwog is $50.97 and those nice lightweight Hanes sweatshirts for about $5.00. :D :D :D

Thank guys... I thought convinced myself I didn't need this knife, especially since I really want the upcoming Forum knife. However, after seeing more action on this thread, and the referenced price drop, I just ordered a Tenacious for $28.23 delivered.

You all have been doing quite the :spyder: job on my wallet lately.
