Afi's Input.
I've been talking about my new BG-42 Millie since i got it, prolly to the annoyance of some but I will try to make this the last thing I post regarding it :)
In your Afi opinion, Should I heed my apprehension to carry my BG42 Millie? I have a Pac Salt and Tenacious that see equal ammounts of pocket time, but when I put the millie in my pocket, i feel like if i screw this knife up, i will never have another chance at owning one ever again. Kinda hinders my ability to enjoy it really. I LOVE using it, it is still laser sharp with no signs of slowing down. I handle all my knives carefully, but use them all regularly so, its not like I baby them. I cant afford to buy another knife until Christmas probably, and if I did, it would be a leafstorm, not another millie as i already have one. Anyone feel the same way about their not-so-common knives? I dont consider myself a collector by no means, and really enjoy using my different knives accordingly. But its just something about losing something you may never have the chance to hold again if you screw it up. I dunno....

If you love to look at it, keep it nice. If you love to use it, use it.
An Aficianado will say use it and enjoy it.
A collector will say do not harm it.
I once used and abused a dodo. I even chipped a tooth (it was serrated) When I sold it I still got about $75 dollars for it and I got more enjoyment out of the knife by really using it.
I'm going to have to say use it. You may not be able to get that same military ever again. But you will be able to get another military. Maybe S30V, maybe S90V. Who knows.... you might use that BG42 for 10 years, 20 years. Who knows what awesome handle materials and steels will be available by then. The BG42 Carbon fiber will be good from a collector standpoint, but not an Aficianado.
As far as my future military steel and handle material guess I will say....
Handle material will be a self healing organic that will feel like shaking hands with yourself.. it will have self regulating temperature... The steel will be donated from some alien race that deals only with Spyderco due to their good Karma generating nature. With that same old bulletproof linerlock :D

IMO, its like having a nice car and only driving it on weekends when the sun is out. NOT. Enjoy it use it. In your case, I would sort of select what I use it for. I wouldnt beat on it like an older knife, but I would use it for pretty much everything else. Ive got one beater knife from another company that is in my tool box that gets used for stuff that Im not sure is good for it. All other use goes to whatever Spydie Im carrying.
Just to be clear...Im not totally an AFI, not enough experience/knowledge...yet

My first response from sal. WOOT! I can relate to this as the old surfboard shapers of old use to say " Its not the board or the materials that allow a surfer to Fly, but the spirit that the shaper poured into it." Everything makes good sense when I hear it from other entusiast's, I'll be sure to pocket her more often.sal wrote:The "Spirit" of a Spyderco knife comes alive when used. That's when the materials, geometry, ergonomics, action and design come into play.
Otherwise its a "fugly" piece of 3D art.

That was my thing, I totally HAD to have it in my pocket when I woke up and got ready for work, then when i got there, I would have to think twice about using it and then feel almost guilty thinking about the scarcity of this metal.
Quite the Connundrum.

As Sal once said: “Open, close, cut, clean, oil, cut, cut, cut... To a Spyderco, that is living. Letting it die in the box is to lose 75% of what we put into it." :spyder:

I say use it. From an afi and knife user's point of view, the whole reason I got rid of all my other production knives is that Spydercos were and are designed to be used. Some have a more specific use than others but they are all great knives. I too can't afford to collect knives, if I don't use it or carry it a few times a month I end up selling it. The whole purpose behind the Millie being offered in different steels was to offer the customer better performance. Besides, that peel-ply CF is the best looking handle material out there...
Donovan, you must use it man! The BG-42 Millie is my all-time favorite folder ever! Yes, I only have one and I carry and use it on a regular basis. I have said this for some time now, but if I was forced to sell all but one of my knives, the BG-42 Millie would be my keeper. How will you ever come to fully appreciate it and bond with it if all you ever do with it is open and close it and stare at it? Use it, use it, use it! :D
I prefer to ask for forgiveness rather than permission.

You will all be glad to know that i used my Millie in an all night instalation-fest at my buddies house last night. The knife ate thru everything I thru at it and is still sharp as the day i got it. I am in total love with this knife. If the spirit of this knife, as sal suggested, is to be experienced whilst using it, I indeed felt it last night, and now, it feels like a real companion by my side. Thank you Spyderco and all of you forumites out there. I have graduated from plain adoration, to a more complete appreciation for my tool.Billy wrote:Donovan, you must use it man!
