Full flat grind FRN Delica & Endura?

#1

Post by catamount »

Does anyone else find it interesting that Sal & Eric want to change the grind on standard FRN Delicas & Enduras to full flat, in spite of their concerns about how it will be received by non-afis?

Please post your thoughts on this.

I'm an admirer of Spyderco's designs. Using them is like immersing yourself in music or studying a painting in a museum. I buy some "fine" art but my preference is for usable art.

I was surprised(in a good way) that Sal & Eric decided to make FFG Endura/Delica models. I definitely did not expect them to make that announcement, and I am very glad that they did(FFG is probably my favorite). I am also really glad that they are asking us forum input on some new colors that may be used for the "altered" Endura's/Delica's. I assume that many people would love the FFG models(considering many have been sent to Tom Krein for a regrind). Just some of my thoughts.

Although I love FFG knives, I'll be a little sad to see the current Delica/Endura flat saber grind go. It's such a classic and looks beautiful to my eyes, especially on the Emerson opener and full Spyder edge models. It looks strong, is strong, and gives a 'heft' to the blade that many users find reassuring, especially if they're new to knives in general. I don't know if it's economically feasible, but it would be nice if Spyderco could offer a choice of either grind across the Delica/Endura lineup.

Well, I hate to burst your bubble, but Joe Average buys a lot more knives than the knuts do. I think it is an excellent idea to use a different color FRN for the flat grinds, hopefully something that will catch old Joe's eye to make up for the lack of interesting grind. As much as I love flat grinds, Joe doesn't seem to know the difference between a knife, a screwdriver and a crowbar. Either that, or he thinks they are interchangable. Changing the workhorse bestsellers from saber grind to flat is something to be approached with extreme caution.
I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.

If you look back, "John Q Buyer's" preference for hollow ground was the result of advertising hoopla which touted it as THE grind to have on kitchen and steak knives. Perhaps Sal has determined that it the past couple years HSN has convinced them that full flat is the way to go. ;) :D

I think they should both introduce the FFG and keep the Flat Sabre grind. These knives are the most readily available Spydercos and I agree that many people would prefer the (tip) strength of the Flat Sabre grind. When you think Spyderco, What comes to mind? For me it's the FRN Endura and Delica. I think its win-win to have the choice of both.

I have to agree with Scottie. I'm and old guy and have been collecting knives for years, mostly slipjoints and Spydercos. I decided a long time ago that I couldn't afford to keep up with all the new models and since the Endura was my favorite knife, started collecting them. I like the saber grind and would hate to see it go. I would like to see the full FFG as a variation and would most likely buy any new colors.

I would rather see the two grinds as options from the factory. I don't want to see Spyderco spread themselves too thin as they obviously have knife nut models (Stretch FRN, Caly3, etc). However, I would rather see these two options than say, a tanto/clip point/drop point offering.

As mentioned above, the non-knife demographic buys a ton of knives. Never the non-fanatical buying public as they do represent about 99.9% of the population. We obviously get what we want when we make enough noise, I would love to see Spyderco make a TON of money as they sure deserve it.

Well I don't have Endura's, just Delica's. It would be a hard choice to go FFG with the Endura, but for me a small light knife like the Delica I say, FFG all the way. Before the factory FFG G10 model I made one.

Given the popularity of the krein'd delica/enduras it seems only natural to offer the blade shape in multiple handles. Its the same material and the blades themselves already exists so its just a matter of shuffling them around to have a broader menu I think.

Its like when I worked at Taco Bell / KFC in high school. All the ingredients there allows there to be a new menu item almost every month. Same stuff, same tools just a different finished product and people ate it up. ...oh pardon the pun...
