New model announcements - "Persistence"
I got my Persistence in the mail yesterday. I really like it. I will try to get some Tenacious comparison shots up tonight.
I did have a problem with it though. I wanted to move the clip but all of my T6 torx are too lose and the T7 is too big. I called the SFO and they confirmed that they should be T6. I was able to get one of the screws out, but the other two wont budge and I am afraid they are stripping. I tried 3 different Craftsman drivers and both of the T6 bits in my Benchmade Bluebox. I am not sure why the T6s are so lose. Anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks,
BeefTips

I had the same problem. Look at the screws with a magnifing glass. I think they are hex rather than torx. 1.5 mm allen wrench seemed to fit better. They are also lock tighted.BeefTips wrote:I got my Persistence in the mail yesterday. I really like it. I will try to get some Tenacious comparison shots up tonight.

Man you would think the handle would be smAller...Either way great deal and can't wait for mine later this week!
Why do you think the handle should be smaller?
When we design a smaller knife, it's very important to us that the knife is still ergonomic. It always amazes me that when deigners make a smaller version, they seem to just "shrink" up the handle and then it's too small for an adult's hand.

On what Sal said...
It's also true that you can't simply shrink a handle from one size to the next.
Example is the Delica and Endura...
As the handle size shifts, so do the ergonomic comfort points in relation to the new size.
Therefore, what's good for one size is not good for the next.
Sal, just wanted to say I'm still amazed at how comfortable the Urban is even though it's quite small. I'm a little pissed I left it in San Francisco for the summer :D

I was able to get another screw out with an allen wrench, but the third one is completely stripped now. Charlynn said I could send it in, but shipping would be 1/3 the price I paid for the knife. I have another one on order b/c I really do like the knife and think it is an awesome deal. I am not sure if I am just going to leave the clip where it is or take more drastic measures to remove that last screw. Hopefully, the next one I get will be more cooperative.BeefTips wrote:I got my Persistence in the mail yesterday. I really like it. I will try to get some Tenacious comparison shots up tonight.

I couldn't agree more. Thank goodness you have such a clear understanding of a principle that should be obvious to everyone.
There are those manufactures that design a knife around particular blade length. The handle fits an adult at that blade length. Then to save money (drawing time, development ??) they simply shrink or enlarge the entire design. I have bought one of these on-line once. I liked the 4” blade knife and thought it would be nice to have a 3” blade. But, my hand didn’t shrink to fit the smaller knife.
Guess I just need to buy from someone that understands the basic principles ergonomics: Fit the task to the man.

Mine should be here tomorrow and I think that I am going to try and put a low ride wire clip in like on the caly3. I think I could do it using the lanyard hole for the bolt and just mill some slots in for the clip.

Delica and Endura are great knives! They're the low priced crack samples that'll get you hooked on spyderco! Feed the need!

I've a few Spyderco's now but the Tenacious was the first one. Sort of like a first love. There's something special about it. I'll be getting a persistence as soon as I can make an order to Canada at a decent shipping rate. Looks like another winner for Spyderco. I'm also glad you didn't shrink the handle as the Tenacious handle is perfect for me. From the pics that BeefTips posted, it almost seems as if the Persistence has a broader blade.

But the alternate argument would be, aside from legal issues, why carry a 3" blade that takes up 4.5" in your pocket when you can carry a 3.5" blade in a package which takes up the same amount of room. To me, that just seems inefficient.sal wrote:H STi,

There's also the esthetic. I know you believe "tractors don't have to look like Ferraris". However, some folks do appreciate line and proportion, even in farm equipment.

I know photos can sometimes be deceiving, but it looks like the Persistence combines a Sage, or Caly 3, size blade with a Tenacious size handle. Can't speak for anyone else, but I don't find either of the considerable smaller and more proportionate handles of those two to be too small.
All this probably means is that the Persistence is aimed a a market of which I, and possibly STI, are not part and do not totally understand. Nothing wrong with that.

Thanks for responding tto that post and yes you are dead on :)
Thanx Paul,
I think that 3.0 inches is the tipping point. If the blade is 2.5, we're looking at finger choils or "cusps" on the rear or the knife, or both, or just plan for a 2/3 finger knife.
The Tenacious / Persistance "concept" calls for full length blade / cutting edge, secure grip, workhorse.
As far as the two knives in question;
Tenacious handle overall length = 4-3/8" (111mm)
Persistance handle overall length = -1/8" (103mm)
I don't think the handle / blade length ratio will be a problem and the Persistence handle carries much smaller than the Tenacious.
Maybe we can see a photo of the models closed, with the hilt end in line?
