Sage 1 vs UKPK

#1

Post by Paul 883215 »

Hi all,

I'm looking for a OC folder and I can not decide between the Sage and the UKPK. I love the design of the Sage and I am a huge liner lock fan but it is made overseas. I also love the design of the UKPK and its made in the USA but it has no lock. It has been a long time since I have used a slipjoint knife. Today I am leaning towards to the UKPK what do you think???

Thanks,
Paul

Sllipjoints are wonderfully useful knives. Have you considered the Urban? That said, I think the Sage (2 ) is my favorite Spyderco at the moment, but the first Sage is pretty nice also.

I have both, and carry the Sage. The Sage, any Sage is a much better all round knife than the UKPK. It's a little bigger than the UK, but carries light. Sage of course has a lock. The handle, for me, feels much better also.

The S30V is American and shipped there.
Gook luck, let us know.

Just my 2 cents.

If you can only get one...and you have no legal carry issues with a locking knife.

Sage all the way.

The UKPK is great though...I have them both...I just prefer the lock. ;)

I have both and if you can get past the 'not made in the USA, Earth' deal, you will find the Sage I to be a great knife - fit and finish is great. I love my UKPK, but for the money, the Sage I is a better deal - same blade steel and CF.

When I bought my Sage I I had the same thought about the 'Taiwan' marking on it. But honestly, you can't tell it from a US made Spyderco knife. It's very well crafted, and one of my favorites.

The UKPK is a nice knife, and not without its own merits. I would probably think about what I would be using this knife for, and factor that into my decision. For normal EDC tasks, if it were my choice, I'd go with the Sage.

I still own my ukpk, I traded my sage away.

That said, both GREAT knives, I just LOVE the UKPK and Caly3 (cf/zdp variant). I will eventually pick up another sage, but it just didn't feel quite right in my hand, I want the sage 2 more than another cf sage at this point. :)

Thank you for all of your opinions!!!

I guess it comes down to this: I have plenty of locking knives for heavy duty use and I am very interested in Spyderco's Slipit design. I think that I'll order the UKPK... I'll let you know what I think.

You cant go wrong there. Im carrying the UKPK right now. I actually like the shape & ergos a bit better than Sage I. So, Im contradicting myself a bit from my earlier post. I like the UKPK better, but I still think the Sage I is more knife for the money. Love the orange!!! :D

Tough call, I think. Currently carrying the Sage II and the FG UKPK. Had both for a couple of weeks now. I'm in high tech/office and found they are equally useful for most of the things I do. I also have a Caly 3 and black UKPK and interestingly, I found I've carried the UKPK more:-) Haven't pushed any of these near as hard as say, my FRN/CE/D4 or Atlantic Salt/SE or Byrds.

Hey,

I was about to order and I saw the drop point UKPK. Wow! **** you Spyderco!
I'm going to have to find another job. I have a couple of questions that you might be able to help me out with.

1. Have any of you used the drop point version of the UKPK???

2. What do you think of the design compared to the leaf blade?

3. Does anyone have it in stock now?

I would love to be able to compare the two in hand, however all of my local shops have a pretty poor selection of spydies. Thanks for helping me out.

I can answer a few of your questions
  1. Not yet, I just ordered mine, but I do have the stretch ii with a very similar blade shape, though larger. I love the shape, it has a great belly for slicing, a great point for piercing, and the overall shape is fantastic for general utility use. The curve on the top of the spine is awesome when you choke up on the blade for detailed work. The only problem with the stretch, if you can call it a problem, is it's a little bigger than I prefer for EDC. I work in an office environment, and I like the low riding clip of the caly3, ukpk, etc. I always wanted a caly3 sized stretch. Now I have it!!! (or at least I will soon :D .
  2. I answered that above.
  3. I purchased my knife at knifecenter.com

I have both. The Sage is undoubtedly better VFM and I couldn't care less exactly where it's made. However, it's the UKPK that gets the pocket time.

Thanks for the replies. Its kinda embarassing but I couldn't make up my mind on the two blade styles so I ordered a M2... it should be here any day. I also have decided that I may need to own one of each locking style (I'm thinking all american made) so my current wish list includes: Para, Military and the UKPK.

Sorry that I'm so wish washy I'm usually not like that.

No worries Paul. With so many great options from Spyderco, it'll make your head spin. Quick question, do you own any axis lock knives? I was wondering how the caged ball lock compares in terms of smoothness and usability. I'm sure it's extremely secure.

I really like the axis lock and will most likely buy a ball lock Spydie, especially if it has a FFG blade in VG-10, S30V or ZDP189. It would be awesome to combine the UKPK drop point with a ball lock!!! ;) .

Buckle,

I do not own any Benchmade knives but I have handled several, so take my opinions with a grain of salt. I would equate the lock on the M2 to a "beefer" Axis lock. The opening is really smooth but closing it does take more effort, however, the lock seems much stronger. The only complaint I've ever heard about the Axis lock is about the strength of the spring and I'm sure you will hear no complaints about the M2's spring.

I would grab a UKPK with a bb lock in a second! I believe you would not even need liners with the BB lock!!!

Paul,
I've heard of problems with Benchmade's Omega springs in their axis locks as well, though I haven't had any. Of course, they don't get as much use now that I'm a Spyderco addict.

Has a ballpark release date been set for a ball lock sage? I've heard that one will be made, but I'm not sure if that's official.

Though I haven't handled a ball lock Spyderco yet, it seems to be an ingenious evolution of the theory. The ball would wear better than the bar on the axis lock. Both are made to rotate, but the bar is limited in its rotation.

Axis locks are convenient, but all the moving parts has always worried me. I agree that the ball lock seems to be much stronger.

BTW, sorry for the double post. I was trying to edit it and somehow posted it twice. :o

Things may have changed, but last I heard, Sal was not even certain the Sage could accommodate a ball lock.

Found the thread - comment by Sal is in Post #12
