An offer for Spyderco

#1

Post by i.v »

I was thinking, This summer I'm not going to have a lot of water activity (usually I do), and I was wondering if the good folks at Spyderco would be interested in taking my Salt 1 for testing. I've had it for well over 4 years now, it's been used ALOT and it's been sharpened a lot.

I'd be happy to send it in because I'd love to see some actual data on hardness and all the other H1 properties that may have changed over time and usage.

I hope that others here will want this type of information. Thoughts?

Good idea. I bet they would like to have a look at it.

If I may, what do you do around/in water?

Nothing impressive Impressive I'm afraid :o
On a typical summer I go swimming a lot and I like to hike in water trails. Usually the Salt 1 is always with me, always wet and cuts everything I need it to, mostly fruit.

Since I went back to school, I'll probably spend the summer studying rather than hiking so I can afford to part with my Salt for a few months

That's cool.

I just got the Pacific Salt, however I live in the desert, and the only thing I can do is swim with it, at least for now.

Love the yellow! These are really great knives for the money!

We do test quite a bit, but I would certainly like to see it. Yours must be one of the first out there.

This is awesome. I hope they don't mind sharing the findings/data after the fact. Rock on!

Never mind! The arabs wear bathrobe although they may have never seen a pool of water in one! :D

PS: Anyway, I also love the yellow one!

Sal,
If you'd like another oldie to look at, I believe I have an early Salt 1 PE. I am quite sure it's one of the first run as the clip is steel and it lacks the H1 logo. It is my hardest/most used knife. I'll send it your way as well if it would be of interest.

I am very interested in this, as I have always admired H1 from afar until recently getting my Kreined Pacific Salt. It takes a great edge that is completely uneffected in the Hot Tub or swimming pool, it is just amazing stuff. I am curious how the regrind effected the hardness on mine, but it only has a few sharpenings on it so the actual edge isn't all that used. If there is any interest in seeing if regrinding to FFG has any notable effect on the hardness I'll send mine in. I should hopefully have my H1 Spyderhawk to play with soon and with my Kreined Barong amazing me everyday I could part with mine for a while if anyone cared to test it, though I bet the 3-5 year old users are the knives where real work hardening properties of the steel can be seen. The way that steel holds an edge (respectable, but no VG-10 in my PE yet) while laughing off water and chemicals is amazing. Knowing the harder I use it the better it will get is also another great thing to know, especially to a guy like me that loves to cut things up just to get a chance to sharpen my blades to extremely high levels of polish. The extreme sharpness it is capable of is real nice, too. Spyderco innovation by taking this wonderful steel and putting them into handles with molds that were already paid off is just a great way for us to get to use this steel in proven platforms that will save us money is just part of what makes Spyderco so great for us ELU's.

I've had my Tasman for quite a while...seems like 3 or 4 years...not sure exactly when it was. I don't think it was long after it came out if I'm not mistaken. Its taken quite a beating even though it doesn't necessarily get used REAL hard.

I'm pretty positive that mine is one of the first ones out there. For one, it's numbered, and I was very much hyped about H-1 before they were released & got one immediately when they became available.

I'm very happy to see there's interest. I'll have my Salt shipped on its way to Golden by the end of the week
