Blade Swap on an Urban

#1

Post by FLYBYU44 »

Has anyone besides Tricord tried this yet? I'm thinking of it, since I really, really like the orange Urban, but hate the warncliff blade, I want the blade for the green one in the orange one. Will it fit and if so, will it be nice looking? Also, do you guys think anyone would buy the green one with the warncliff blade? (I wouldn't want it)

Blade swap on the urban

#3

I did it. Was a little surprised at how much effort/tension is on the bar/spine. I now have a FG wharncliff that I don't really want, but I'll find a use for it eventually. So It was not the easiest blade swap, but the end result rocks. Orange G-10 with the leaf shaped blade is perfection. I wish they gave you the option to buy it like this. Do it. You'll like it.

Would you say that fit and finish was the same after the swap? I'm a little concerned that I will purchase both knives (which will be almost $200) do the swap and be left with two knives that both don't fit together too well. I don't know why they don't offer both of them with the two different blades. Personally I'd be happy if they just used the leaf shape blade for both, but I guess some people like wharncliffs.

Both the knives lock up tight. I found the tension on the front screw to really effect the tightness of the open/close action. This may sound obvious but it made both a lot more user friendly. I went ahead and made both slightly more loose than they were from the factory. As for the finish of the blades, they look as if they were exact fits.

A blade swap is certainly possible. I only suffered cosmetic de-centering of the blade when closed. I'm perfectly happy the way it turned out.

Now that the new Sage has come out, I may put this project on the backburners for a while. :) Thanks to all the chimed in, sounds very doable.
