Is it bad to play with it too much?

HAH! I was wondering if onening & closing a Spyderco is bad for the knife?
I just recieved my Lum Chinese folder, and it's just so much fun to fling it open! Is this something I shouldn't do?

No matter how well built, a folding knife has a finite life span. Each time you open or close it the result is wear on the moving parts. On a quality knife, the amount of wear is minuscule, but it is still inevitable. "Flinging" any knife open causes additional damage as well. Some knives can take that type of abuse better than others, some makers may even claim their products are immune to it, but the reality is, if you bang any two objects against one another often enough, one or the other will be damaged.

I thank you for your feedback. The way you worded your reply to my, now seemingly idiotic question was perfect. It just makes me a bit sad though. I love unfolding and folding my knives, I love just "playing" with my knives in general. Guess I should take it easy on a knife that costs $100+ though. That just makes sense... :o (

I would think that the $100+ folder should be able to handle the "fondling" just fine. It's the $5 gas station knives you have to worry about.

It`s like listening to a door open and close on a ferrari automobile, the sound of precision that allmost describes the sound of a spyderco knife opening and closing it`s irresistible. ;)

Thats an idea for you, Get yourself a baliyo, theyre cool pens and theyll keep you flippin for hours! and theyre cheaper than knives so you wont feel as bad playing w/ that constantly lol

I believe Spyderco knives are designed for 12,683,417 normal open/close cycles. The more you play with it, the faster you use up the alloted cycles. Some folks don't reach that in a lifetime, others manage it in a week. ;)

Life is short just enjoy it. What if you get hit by a bus tomorrow. :p

I do the same thing, because I honestly love hearing the sound. Use and enjoy it. You can replace almost any spydie you currently have. Unless you have a proto red military, Cranberry lum or dino bone executive. :D

Look at it this way.

It's a $120 knife and it gives you an obscene amount of joy for just pennies a day. If you just keep it for one year this knife has more than paid for itself. Keep it more than one year and you truly have one of the best investments money can buy. :)

1 year - 0.35 cents a day or something this knife is costing you. (Your happiness or 0.35 cents a day which do you prefer) If you can have a cup of coffee, smoke a cigarette, have a piece of chocolate or a big mac then you can enjoy that knife everyday as well. Spyderco knives are much healthier than all the before mentioned things as well. :)

take care bud
aj

p.s Don't flick them to hard ;) , and buy a back-up if your really worried.

Is this a fact?! That's hard to even wrap my head around. How'd "they" whoever they may be, even come up with such an estimate?

No it's not a fact. I guess what yablanowitz wants to say is - Don't worry!
We all love to play with folding knives from time to time and we all open and close folders just for fun, no matter how old we are :p
You Lum Chines has the liner lock. You will see "the end" of playing when the liner will reach the opposite. Note that the liner moves fast around the ramp at the beginning of this lifecycle; this will stop soon and liner position on the ramp will be almost static for loooooooooooooooong time. Hope I could calme you down.

There is nothing to worry about at all. Use them all you want...and, have fun!

Hey, worst case is you will have to get a new knife!
