Badly bitten

Post by Chivers »

Well, I’m now a fully initiated member of the Spyderco clan, having got myself well and truly snagged at my brother-in-law’s 50th birthday party. My fault, there was plenty of red wine flowing and a driver was organised to take us to the hotel afterwards, so I may possibly have been a bit wrecked. Anyway, each table had four helium balloons flying from ribbons, and at some point I thought it would be a great idea to cut one loose and breathe in the gas to get that Donald Duck voice effect.
Somehow I managed to practically cut the top off my right-hand little finger (pinkie in America) with my trusty UK Penknife. It took 20 minutes to stop the bleeding, but luckily there were two trained nurses there who sorted me out and Steri-stripped the finger. That was five nights ago and I still have the original dressing on, so hopefully it will all knit together fine.
To me, this incident proves two things: 1) Slipits are far more dangerous to the user than lock knives
2) Drink and fooling around with knives, for whatever purpose, don’t mix.
Anyway, I shall now have three good scars on the fingers of my right hand. The other two were inflicted by a small pike that flipped while I was unhooking it. Nature’s own Spydie with G10 teeth!

Agree with #2, but #1 shouldn't be an issue if you use the knife anything close to correctly :p :D

Sorry about your mishap. Just wanted to know how a locking knife would have prevented this?

Not trying to steal my buddy JCMED's quote but here goes "Using while stupid may cause injury".I believe we have all had temporary lapses in judgement.Don't really think it's the lock on the knife. ;)

I've never hurt myself while goofing around with a knife. It is when I try to do serious work that something happens, lol. Maybe I should stick to goofing around.

Im reminded of a friend of mine...

Picked up a knife and touched the edge with his thumb...
"%*%* thats sharp!", he exclaims, and continues testing the edge.
"be careful", says I... knowing that it is indeed sharp...

Sure enough, moments later he has surgically sliced his thumb open, deeply gashed. We bandage it up and he remains in disbelief that he inflicted such an injury to himself...

In fact he was so mystified at how he managed to do this, that sure enough, a few minutes later, he was again testing the edge in disbelief with his remaining uninjured thumb.

...

...

He went home both thumbs bandaged... go figure.

Thanks to all who wished my little finger well. Took the dressing off and it’s healing fine, no loss of feeling, just a neat crescent shaped scar and no prospect of losing the top of the pinkie. No fear of a repeat incident, either. Anyone seen the film ‘Black Rain’? I have no wish to join the Yakuza or buy a Tanto knife after that grisly little scene of modern Bushido...

I managed to shave my head with my UKPK with no cuts at all. It was bit touch-and-go for awhile and I was a little nervous around the back, but a good mirror set-up and a steady hand won the day. And I still have both ears! :D

On the other hand, I just cut myself AGAIN on a **** clam pack. A pox on the horrible things, I say!

great story. i'm sure your friends will laugh about it for quite a while.

just last month i was showing my friends how NOT to open a kydex sheath and in the process i slit my thumb with my BRKT PSK. Quite a "LOL" and especially sad that they didn't know what gauze was when I threw them my first aid kit with my one good hand.
