I'm in Baton Rouge. Turbo Dog is one of my favorites! I had the Dogfish IPA last week and it is a great beer.grunt0331 wrote:hey drf. where do you live? i grew up in Slidell. when i was about 16 yrs old, my skater friends and i would go to the French Quarter and get 32oz Turbo Dogs for $2. that was many years ago. now, i like the Jockamo IPA and the seasonals. we now get the Andygator here in 22oz bottles.
here, in central Texas, we have quite a few micros. my favorite is Real Ale out of Blanco, Texas.
aside from Texas brews and home-brews, i am also a fan of Stone in Ca and Dogfish in De.
in the fridge right now is Sierra Nevada, as usual.
Local Microbrews
Good Thread. Always cool to check out local Microbrewerys when visiting somehwere. There are a few microbrewerys here in Hawaii. Kona Brew makes some great beer and food if you are ever in the Kona area. We also have Mehana tried it a few times good stuff. Maui Brewing is supposed to be another I haven't had an opportunity to try it. Also Brew Moon on Oahu, again I haven't been over there to try it out.
There is usually a brew festival every year here (konabrewersfestival.com) it's been loosing some of the participants but they still get a pretty good showing of food and brews. I haven't gone to one yet because I might try to go and taste as much as I can and that probably would end up not good. :D

Pick up a copy of "The Complete Joy of Homebrewing" by Charlie Papazian. Its the home brewer's bible. Tons of information for beginners and tons of great recipes.clovisc wrote:making my own porters and stouts... next on my list of hobbies to acquire... :D

Had one Saturday
Friend stopped by Saturday , he makes his own beer about 6 cases twice a year at a place in Peoria . It was a Belgium Double , whew ! Was it strong and flavor outstanding . MG2
West Coast:
Alaskan Brewing Company is tops. Smoked Porter, ESB, and Oatmeal Stout are excellent beers. Unfortunately, they don't distribute outside the West Coast.
East Coast:
Dogfish Head in DE. Great specialty beers. Definitely not for everyone. Their 60 Minute IPA is the best of the best for general session drinking. Try the 90 or 120 Minute IPA if you are a true hop freak. Warning: They have 9% and 12% ABV, respectively.
Iron Hill Brewery in DE/PA also very good. Nice seasonal variety. Tried a really nice smoked wheat beer and an Irish stout last time I was in. Would have made a perfect black and tan.
Have yet to find any good authentic microbreweries in Northern Virginia.

One of my favorite breweries is in Lincoln, NE: Empyrean Ales.
I know they sometimes make some special brews (like a chocolate porter that even my beer-hating girlfriend loved), but so far my favorites are Dark Side Vanilla Porter, and Fallen Angel Sweet Stout.
If you're ever in Lincoln (or there's one in Omaha too), look up Lazlo’s Brewery & Grill, the beer is great, the food is delicious, the service is top notch, and the prices are very reasonable (Heck, it might be cheaper than Applebees).

I gave up buying beer in order to justify buying knives. Before the spyder bite, my favorite was Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. A more recent favorite was a Colorado beer call 2 deg Below Zero by New Belgium.

Current Favorite: Caly 3.5, Super Blue. We're done here. It doesn't get better than the Caly 3.5

We have a good number of microbreweries either around here or readily available here. Weyerbacher, Dogfish head, Victory, and a few others. I am also a fan of North Country brewing in Slippery Rock PA (which unfortunately does not package their stuff for retail sales; they are more of a brew-pub.) and Erie Brewing out of Erie, PA. My brother and one of my sisters attended Slippery Rock U. so the brewery was always a stop when visiting them (that is after Slippery Rock Stopped being "dry" and allowed alcohol in town) and I have a friend who used to play for Erie's rugby club which was sponsored by Erie Brewing- so we got introduced to that. Sometimes I can get it here, but more often than not the car gets loaded down with cases everytime somebody makes a trip to Pittsburgh. I strongly suggest trying anything by them if you can get it, but especially the "Railbender Ale"- it is my favorite beer tastewise- it is excellent!!
