tasman or pacific

#1

Post by greg27 »

im around salt water alot and am not that good at getting around to cleaning my knives so the salt knives seem to be the logical choice for me any input or prefrence between the tasman and the pacific?

If you only want to carry one, then the Pacific is more versatile. The Tasman complements it very well, though, so the best answer is both.

Now you just have to decide PE or SE ;)

I'm an admirer of Spyderco's designs. Using them is like immersing yourself in music or studying a painting in a museum. I buy some "fine" art but my preference is for usable art.

Depends on your intended use, but in general I'd agree with Tom. If you mostly cut rope or nets, then the Tasman would probably suit you better. Otherwise, the Pacific is a better choice.

Get both! I tested out my new Pac Salt last night by wearing it to the hot tub, then leaving it submerged in water overnight to find it still pristine and shaving in the morining. The Tasman will do that as well, but cut rope, boxes, vines, and other things better than you can imagine (and better than a Pacific Salt) due to the wonderful properties of a hawkbill. The Pac Salt will cut food better and be more farmiliar feeling during cutting, but my Superhawk has more than proven the tremendous versatility of the hawkbill bladeshape to me.

I debated about which to get. I got the yellow SE tasman first. Then I decided that having both would be an H1 dream team. So I got a black SE pacific. At this point I would never want to be without either.

I would go for Pacific, MAYBE....

If I could have one and only one knife and I would live around the water I would choose the Pacific Salt. And if I would have more money later I would by the Tasman, too.

What I know, I always would choose the yellow one. Simply I like it's color. But if it is not convincing for you, the yellow one is easier to find when you drop it or loose it.

PE vs. SE? Well, it is always a hard question for me. Maybe SE around the water but PE for EDC. ??? Maybe Pacific PE and Tasman SE. But I love all of the variations. That's why I love :spyder: ! Sal always really offers something to choose!

Check it out! LOL, fighting with sharks by a folder!

That is the combination I choose. Very good combo. But now I want a PE Tasman as well...

I honestly like the Tasman better but all the comments and caveats above are spot on. Thing is, I have several PEs I like better than my Pac Salt but the Tasman is my favorite Hawk (for most things....;-)

Good luck,

Ken

Both is the best answer to that question.

I have a Tasman and recently got the Ladybug Salt. They go really well together IMO. Ladybug is like a great lil sidekick for the Tasman.

+1 on getting both!

these are two of the greatest and most useful EDC workhorse knives spyderco has produced, and have both been indispensable parts of my EDC for the last 4 years. i don't know what i'd do without these two designs... they've taken great care of me everywhere from africa to alaska.

I'd echo the sentiments above- if you really like them both, get both- you can always sell the other with little to no problem (if you're like me this will never happen). SE vs PE is another matter- this seems to be one of the odd situations in which SE seems preferred over PE. I have a PE Tasman otw and having seen all the positive reactions to it am really looking forward to using it. May well end up with an SE version as well.
